Christy ChungThis Canadian born actress and former Miss Chinese International is a rising film star in both Asia and the United States, although she remains virtually unknown in her native Canada.
Christy Chung was born on September 19, 1970, in Montreal, Canada. Her father is Chinese while her mother is Vietnamese. She was raised in Brossard, Quebec, speaking French and Vietnamese. She later became fluent in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese to further her career. Chung graduated from Antoine-Brossard High School located in Brossard, Quebec.
It was not until Chung began studying tourism at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal that she first became interested in modeling and acting. In 1992 she entered the Miss Chinese Montreal contest and won. This victory qualified Chung to travel to Hong Kong to compete in the Miss Chinese International contest in January of 1993.
She won that contest as well, which opened up opportunities for Chung to become involved in acting, although she had had no prior training. In fact, the only experience she had acting, was a ten second speaking role as a prostitute in the film Love and Human Remains in 1993.
Chung’s first starring role that brought her instant success in Hong Kong was The Bride with White Hair 2. This film quickly launched her career among Chinese audiences and she became in demand as an actress, starring in films like The Bodyguard from Beijing alongside Jet Lee.
In 1997, Chung married Glen Ross and gave birth to their daughter, Yasmine, in January of 1998 in the middle of an ice storm. The hospital where she gave birth was without heat and was powered by back up generators.
The birth of her daughter temporarily caused her career to falter because Asian audiences had trouble identifying a mother as a sex symbol. Chung came back in full force in 2000. In 2002 Chung and Ross divorced amicably and sole custody of their daughter was awarded to Chung.
Some of her more recent films include: Samsara in 2001; The Medallion in 2003, starring Jackie Chan and Claire Forlani; and Jan Dara in 2001, which was a Thai language film. Chung has starred in several films alongside actor Stephen Chow. She was also voted the Sexiest Woman in Asia in 2000 by FHM magazine. Chung also works as the spokesperson for the Marie France Bodyline.
Chung remarried in August of 2003 and resides in Beijing. YUDDY |
