Biography of Singer CiaraGrammy award winning singer and songwriter Ciara was born Ciara Princess Harris on October 25, 1985, in Austin, Texas. Growing up, Ciara’s family was often on the move due to her father’s job in the U.S. Army. They lived on army bases stationed in New York, California, Arizona, Nevada, and Atlanta. A young Ciara first became inspired to pursue a career in music after watching Destiny's Child perform on television. In her teens, Ciara polished her song writing skills and joined the girl group Hearsay, which she eventually left for a publishing deal of her own.
In 2004, Ciara debuted the hit single "Goodies," which quickly climbed the Billboard charts to #1. Her debut album of the same name was released on September 28, 2004, featuring help from Jazze Pha, Ciara’s “musical soul mate;” Sean Garrett, co-writer of Usher's breakthrough hit, "Yeah!;" and Lil Jon, who dubbed Ciara the "First Lady of Crunk & B." The album’s second single, "1, 2 Step" boasted an impressive collaboration with Missy Elliott. The favor was returned when Elliott featured Ciara on her own single, "Lose Control." Ciara’s third single, "Oh," was once again backed by hip-hop star power, featuring a collaboration with Ludacris.
In December of 2005, Ciara joined Gwen Stefani on her much-anticipated Harajuku Lovers Tour, and then joined then-boyfriend, Bow Wow, and Chris Brown for the Holladay Jam tour.
On February 8, 2006, Ciara was recognized with her first Grammy win, receiving an award for Best Short Form Music Video with Missy Elliott. At the awards ceremony, Ciara also performed "Everyday People" with Maroon 5's Adam Levine, as part of a tribute to R&B legend, Sly Stone. Also in 2006, Ciara co-hosted the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in Los Angeles, at which she was nominated for Video of the Year award with Missy Elliot. She also received a nomination for Best Collaboration with Bow Wow at the BET Awards, but did not attend.
Ciara’s sophomore album, Ciara: The Evolution, is slated for release in December 2006, and features the single "Promise." In the summer of 2006, Ciara also contributed the single "Get Up" to the motion picture soundtrack for Step Up; however the song is not featured on her own album.
In May 2006, Ciara made her acting debut in the MTV film All You've Got, starring as volleyball teen-queen, Becca Watley.
Ciara has also extended her collaborative nature to participating in philanthropic projects, including the 4th Annual VH1 Save the Music Hamptons Benefit, which raised over $500,000 towards restoring music programs in the public school system. She has also participated in Michael Jackson’s charity single for victims of Hurricane Katrina, titled "I Have This Dream." YUDDY |
