Cindy CrawfordCindy Crawford is a model, actress, television host, and producer who shot to fame in the 1980s as one of the original supermodels. She is also known for her charity work. Cynthia Ann Crawford was born on February 20th, 1966, in DeKalb, Illinois. Her parents, John and Jennifer, divorced when she was young, and she and her three siblings spent time living on welfare. Crawford’s younger brother Jeff died of leukemia, which led her to devote herself to fundraising for leukemia charities in later life. She always believed in hard work, and did well at school. When Crawford was sixteen a newspaper photographer took a photo of her at her summer job pollinating corn. Upon seeing the photograph many people advised Cindy that she should consider becoming a model. Out of curiosity, she entered the John Casablanca's Look of the Year competition and came in second. After graduating from high school, where she was voted prom queen, she studied chemical engineering at Northwestern University, but soon dropped out to concentrate full time on modeling. Crawford worked with Chicago photographer Victor Skrebneski before moving to New York City. By this time, Crawford was already established as one of the world's top models. She is generally considered to have been one of the original five supermodels, along with Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, and Christy Turlington. Crawford has appeared on the covers of magazines including Vogue, ELLE, Harper's Bizarre, People, and Allure. In 1988 she shocked the world by agreeing to pose naked for Hugh Hefner in Playboy. Though it drew criticism from some feminists, the gamble paid off, raising Crawford's profile.
This work subsequently led to her becoming the host of MTV's House of Style, a position which she held for six years. The show was later hosted by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos. Crawford went on to make numerous television appearances, and in 1995 she launched a movie career with Fair Game, in which she starred with Billy Baldwin and Salma Hayek. Crawford went on to appear in 54, with Neve Campbell, Mike Myers, and Ryan Phillippe; and The Simian Line, with Lynn Redgrave, William Hurt, and Harry Connick Jr. She capitalized on her success by launching a popular series of exercise videos and swimsuit calendars, and winning lucrative advertising contracts with Pepsi and Revlon. Always careful with money, she made an astute early investment in the Planet Hollywood chain, and went on to own her own production company, Crawdaddy, Inc. She also appeared in music videos with Jon Bon Jovi and George Michael and was the subject of a song by Prince. In 1991, Crawford married actor Richard Gere, who was then at the pinnacle of his career after appearing in Pretty Woman with Julia Roberts. The couple were together for three years, though it was rumored that the marriage had been arranged to hide their homosexuality, which Crawford denied. Refusing to be told what to do, and having always been an advocate of gay rights, Crawford went on to appear on the cover of Vanity Fair with k.d. lang. Eight years later Crawford married nightclub owner Rande Gerber, with whom she has two children.
She has also been romantically linked to Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, John Enos III, and Shaquille O Neal. Crawford currently lives in New York, in the same building as Winona Ryder, but also has houses in Bel Air, Westchester, and Malibu. YUDDY |
