Clive OwenBritish Actor Clive Owen was born on October 3, 1964, in Coventry, England. Clive was raised by his mother and stepfather. His father, a country and western singer, abandoned Clive and his mother when Clive was three years old.
Following high school graduation, Clive endured long bouts of unemployment. Although he had been previously opposed to pursuing acting as a profession, in 1984, Clive was accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After graduating in 1987, alongside such notable future actors as Ralph Fiennes and Jane Horrocks, Clive joined the Young Vic Theatre Company, performing numerous classic productions.
In 1988, while playing Romeo in a stage production of Romeo and Juliet, Clive fell in love with his co-star, Sarah-Jane Fenton. The couple later married in 1995 and have two daughters, Hannah and Eve.
In 1986, Clive made his small-screen debut with a guest-starring role on the series Boon, and his film debut came in the 1988 movie Beeban Kidron's Vroom. Meanwhile, he continued to juggle television projects, such as the popular miniseries Chancer. Critics began to take notice of Clive when he starred in the screen adaptation of Martin Sherman's Holocaust drama Bent, playing a bisexual concentration camp prisoner. Also starring Ian McKellen and Mick Jagger, the film received positive reviews but was not a large commercial success.
In 1998, Clive gained international recognition in Croupier, playing a writer who becomes entangled in a scandal after taking a casino job. Clive portrayed a prisoner once again in 2000, starring in the comedy Greenfingers, alongside Helen Mirren.
As Clive’s career on the silver screen received a boost in the late 90s, he still continued to act in stage productions, including the original 1997 London production of Patrick Marber's Closer; as well as Sean Mathias' revival of Noël Coward's Design for Living at London's Donmar Warehouse, alongside Rachel Weisz and Paul Rhys.
Clive continued to receive a steady series of roles into the new millennium. In 2001, he starred as the only recurring character in BMW's Hire series of short films, directed by Ang Lee and Guy Ritchie. That same year, he also performed in Robert Altman's acclaimed Gosford Park.
In 2002, Clive starred opposite Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity. His performance in the popular film led to a starring role as an international relief worker alongside Angelina Jolie in Beyond Borders in 2003.
The following year, Clive secured the title role in the big-budget film King Arthur, which also starred fellow British thespian, Keira Knightley. Year 2004 also saw Clive reuniting with Croupier director Mike Hodges for the small-budget gangster investigation film, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. The film included Charlotte Rampling, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and Malcolm McDowell; however it received minimal attention in the U.S. Also in 2004, Clive appeared in the big-screen adaptation of Closer, which also featured Julia Roberts, Jude Law, and Natalie Portman.
Clive continued to work with big names in the film industry in 2005, starring alongside Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Elijah Wood, and Benicio Del Toro in Sin City. Also in 2005, Clive had the opportunity to star opposite leading ladies Julianne Moore in Savage Grace and Jennifer Aniston in Derailed.
In 2006, Clive was cast as bank-robber extraordinaire in Spike Lee's first blockbuster genre picture, The Inside Man, co-starring Denzel Washington. Next, he starred in Alfonso Cuaron's futuristic thriller Children of Men, which saw him reuniting with co-star Julianne Moore. Clive also demonstrated his range in 2006 by playing Sir Walter Raleigh in Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth: The Golden Age. YUDDY |
