O Brien was born on April 18, 1963, in Brookline, Boston, Massachusetts. He is from an Irish American family and has five siblings; three brothers and two sisters. His father is a physician and works at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His mother, Ruth, was a partner at the Boston law firm of Ropes & Gray.
At his graduation from Brookline High School , O Brien was the valedictorian and following high school, he attended Harvard University , where he also worked as a writer for the magazine, Harvard Lampoon. He graduated magna cum laude in 1985 with his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in history.
After college, O Brien moved out to Los Angeles with the hopes of joining the writing staff for Not Necessarily the News airing on HBO. O Brien worked on the show for two years, which proved to be a good resume builder for him. Following his work on Not Necessarily the News, O Brien teamed up with one of his former Harvard classmates, Greg Daniels, to write for the Wilton North Report on Fox where he was also used as a comedic audience warm up.
In the late 1980’s, O Brien began writing for Saturday Night Live where he would also appear as an extra in many of their sketches. In 1989 he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy or Variety Series. He has also worked as a writer for The Simpsons.
In 1993 O Brien was chosen to replace David Letterman as host of Late Night with David Letterman, when Letterman decided to host a show on CBS O Brien signed Andy Richter on as his sidekick. For the first two to three years hosting the show, O Brien was met with unfavorable reviews and at one point was reportedly cancelled by executives who kept it on a week-to-week basis as they had no other programming to replace it. By 1997, O Brien’s writing and fan base both improved considerably. Since then, Late Night has been consistently nominated for Emmy Awards. During the 2003-2004 season, his show had an average of 2.5 million viewers each week.
In 2001 O Brien created his own production company, Conaco, which has produced Late Night ever since. In 2004, NBC announced that Leno would be retiring from the Tonight Show in 2009 and O Brien was named his successor.
O Brien’s current side project is Andy Barker P.I. where he will be the executive producer and co-writer. The pilot for the show was announced by NBC in March of 2006. The show will star, Andy Richter, O Brien’s former sidekick.
In 2002, O Brien married Liza Powell, daughter of Seattle Dixieland band-leader Jake Powel. The couple had a daughter, Neve, in 2004, and a son, Beckett, in 2005. YUDDY |
