Connie NielsenConnie Nielsen is a Danish actress probably best known for her performance as Lucilla in Ridley Scott's Gladiator.
Connie Inge Lise Nielsen was born on July 3, 1965, in Copenhagen, Denmark. When she was ten years old her family moved to the seaside village of Elling, near Frederikshaven in Jutland. Her mother was an actress and playwright and together they began to perform in local revues, with the young Nielsen training in singing and dancing as well as acting. At the age of eighteen, she decided to move to Paris to seek further opportunities as an actress, and subsequently she spent time in Rome, Milan, South Africa, and New York, eventually establishing a base in Italy. Her travel was aided by her cosmopolitan upbringing, which had made her fluent in Italian, English, German, French ,and Swedish.
Nielsen's first film role was in the critically slated detective thriller Par où t'es rentré? On t'a pas vu sortir, with Jerry Lewis and Philippe Clair. Ironically, it was appearing in bad movies that initially made her name. Critics loathed 1993 thriller Voyage, with Rutger Hauer, Eric Roberts, and Karen Allen, so much that the only positive thing they could find to comment on was Nielsen's performance, praising her in magazines like Variety. A few years later Lawrence Kasdan persuaded her to move to New York, where she won the role of Al Pacino's daughter in The Devil's Advocate, alongside Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron, following it up with Ben Stiller comedy Permanent Midnight. She further demonstrated her range with the dark comedy Rushmore, which also starred Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray. and Brian Cox, and with Brian de Palma's Mission to Mars; but it was Gladiator that really made her a star. Playing Lucilla, sister of Joaquin Phoenix's dangerous emperor and beloved of Russell Crowe's hero, she received several award nominations and won critical acclaim.
After Gladiator, offers of work came in thick and fast, but Nielsen, whose favourite directors are Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, shunned the big money for projects that she felt had artistic merit. She was particularly concerned by the shortage of strong roles for women in Hollywood. In 2002 she starred alongside Robin Williams and Michael Vartan in One Hour Photo and trained with the FBI for her role in William Friedkin's The Hunted, with Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones, before putting those skills to use again in John McTiernan's Basic, with John Travolta, Samuel L Jackson and Giovanni Ribisi. She also continued to involve herself in European film, winning a Danish Best Actress award for her work in Susanne Bier's Brødre in 2004. The following year saw her play a death row inmate opposite Aidan Quinn in Return to Sender, and she subsequently starred alongside John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton in The Ice Harvest. When not occupied with films, she has enjoyed a recurring role in Law and Order: Special Victims' Unit.
Despite her success, Nielsen has shunned the Hollywood lifestyle, her only expensive habit being her collection of designer sunglasses. She is protective of her teenage son Sebastian, whom she did not initially permit to see her more disturbing work. The two live in New York City but also spend time in Italy and Denmark, celebrating holidays in the traditional Danish style. Nielsen is romantically involved with Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich.
