Corbin Bernsen Bio

Corbin Bernsen

Born in Hollywood to an actress mother, and raised in the glitzy world of entertainment Corbin Bernsen was destined for a life on both the big screen and television.

Corbin Bernsen was born on September 7th 1954, the eldest of three children, to Harry Bernsen, a 70’s film/TV producer and Jeanne Cooper, a mother who is best known for her role as Katherine Chancellor on the day time soap opera The Young and the Restless.

Corbin attended Beverly Hills High School in California and graduated in 1971. He went on to attend UCLA with the intention of pursuing law. Instead he went on to receive a BFA in Theatre Arts and MFA in Playwriting. He made his film debut in 1974 as a bit player in his father's picture Three the Hard Way.

Things didn't immediately break for him when he moved to New York in the 1980s, so he took carpentry and modeling jobs before his career in the movies took off.

Although Corbin had appeared in smaller roles up until the 1980’s his first big break came when he was given a regular role on the soap opera, Ryan’s Hope in the mid 1980’s in which he appeared for two years along with other up and coming stars such as Christian Slater and Marg Helgenberger.

Corbin’s next big break came when he was cast as Arnold Becker, one of the stars of the hit series L.A. Law in which he appeared with Harry Hamlin and John Spencer. The series ran from 1986 until 1994 and Corbin was one of only a few actors who remained on the show for the entire run. During his time on L.A. Law he earned himself Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, appearances on dozens of magazine covers, and guest starring roles on then-popular shows such as Seinfeld, with Jerry Seinfield, Michael Richards, Julia Louise-Dreyfus and Jason Alexander and The Larry Sanders Show with other guests such as Sharon Stone, Jim Carrey and Howard Stern.

Corbin’s first marriage was to English born Brenda Cooper, a former model and Emmy Award winning costume designer and while working in film and television, Cooper was dressing stars such as Faye Dunaway, Delta Burke, Patty Labelle, Twiggy, and Christian Slater. By 1993, she was creating the chic and unique style of Fran Drescher, on the popular prime-time television series, "The Nanny", a look which earned her the Emmy Award.

In 1989 Corbin starred in the movie Major League about a badly functioning baseball team who suddenly start winning when they discover a plot to sabotage their game. Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen and Rene Russo also starred with Corbin in the movie and its two sequels.

Corbin’s other film roles have included Dr Finestone in The Dentist and in the sequel The Dentist 2.

Since the new millennium Corbin has appeared in the longest running American soap opera, General Hospital as Attorney John Durant along with other cast members, Kelly Monaco and Jason Gerhardt. His character was written out in 2006 when he was murdered.

Continuing with a legal character Corbin has also appeared in Boston Legal where he plays a lawyer in the practice owned by Crane, Poole and Schmidt played by William Shatner, Michael J Fox and Candice Bergen.

Bernsen is president and co-owner of Public Media Works, a new media company that develops entertainment for targeted fan bases. He directed and starred in Carpool Guy, the company's first film; it was targeted at soap opera fans and released on dvd in 2005.

In 2006 Corbin played an ex-cop in the new USA Network series Psych, which revolves around James Roday’s character, Shawn Spencer, a hyper-observant slacker who passes himself off as a psychic much to the chagrin of his disapproving father Corbin Bernsen.

Corbin Bernsen married his second wife, a British actress Amanda Pays, in 1988 and together they have four sons, two of which are twins.

Corbin has over 6,000 snow globes, one of the largest collections in the world.
