Courtney Thorne SmithActress Courtney Thorne Smith was born on November 8, 1967, in San Francisco, California. Courtney’s father was a computer market researcher, and her mother, a therapist. The couple split when Courtney was seven, and she lived with each parent for different periods of time. Courtney attended Tamalpais High School and became a member of the Ensemble Theater Company in Mill Valley. She also attended Menlo-Atherton High School in California, where she graduated in the early 1980s.
In 1986, Courtney made her big-screen debut in Lucas, which also starred Winona Ryder, Corey Haim, and Charlie Sheen. Subsequent roles in a variety of teen comedies followed, including Welcome to 18 (1986), Summer School (1987), Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise (1987), and Side Out (1990).
Courtney first appeared on the small screen playing the role of Stacy Hamilton on Fast Times, the television series spin-off of the cult teen flick, Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). She also acted in short-lived sitcom Day by Day before eventually being cast as Kimberly Dugan on popular law drama series, L.A. Law.
In 1992, it seemed that Courtney had finally found her niche in the evening drama television genre when she landed the role of Alison on the FOX soap opera Melrose Place. While filming Melrose Place, Courtney became romantically involved with her on again –off again co-star, Andrew Shue (who played Billy, Alison’s love interest on the show). Courtney acknowledged the wacky, swerving plot lines of the show during an interview, stating "Alison has been through so much... sexually harassed, carjacked, had an affair with a married man -- who then tried to rape me, and shot himself while he was on the phone with me. ... I was drunk, sober -- well, getting sober, then I got to have an affair..."
After leaving Melrose Place in 1997, Courtney was cast in what would become another popular and quirky series, Ally McBeal. She played the role of Georgia Thomas, the wife of Ally’s former boyfriend Billy, as well as her colleague. Courtney stayed with the show for three years, leaving in 2000, and was frank in the press about the reported pressure on the show’s set to be thin. She commented: "To be totally honest, if I could be thinner without it causing a lot of pain and anxiety in my life, I would be. But today the reality is, my life is more important to me than my weight - and thank God for that."
An avid fan of yoga, Courtney has attributed the practice with reducing her 32DD chest measurements down to a C cup, claiming, "My body fat got redistributed, and my breasts got smaller."
After leaving Ally McBeal, Courtney landed guest-starring roles on Spin City, starring Michael Fox, Charlie Sheen, and fellow former Melrose Place tenant, Heather Locklear. In 2001, Courtney found a home again on the family sitcom According to Jim, playing Jim Belushi's wife, Cheryl.
Courtney’s success with commercials includes a 1999 campaign as spokeswoman and new face of Almay cosmetics, for their "Skin Stays Clean" line. In 2003, Courtney appeared on Kellogg's Special K cereal boxes as part of a breast cancer awareness campaign with Kellogg’s and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
On June 2, 2000, Courtney wed genetic scientist, Andrew Conrad; however the couple later divorced in 2001. In 2003, Courtney became engaged to cardiologist, Robert Andrews; but called it quits one year later. YUDDY |
