Gooding, Jr. was born on January 2, 1968, in the Bronx , New York . His father, , Sr. was the lead vocalist for the soul group, The Main Ingredient. His mother, Shirley, was also a singer. He has two siblings, one of whom is actor Omar Gooding.
His father abandoned the family after they moved out to Los Angeles making his mother a single parent. The family was forced to bounce around to various hotels throughout Los Angeles, California . At the age of thirteen, Gooding became a born-again Christian and growing up he attended four different high schools including North Hollywood High School , Tustin High School , and Apple Valley High School where he served as class president. A few years ago Gooding’s father remarried his mother, causing the actor to reestablish his relationship with his father.
One of Gooding’s first minor roles was in 1988 in Coming to America, starring Eddie Murphy. His first major role was in 1991 in Boyz N The Hood , directed by John Singleton. The film was well received which led to Gooding being cast in several other films such as Jerry Maguire in 1996, alongside Tom Cruise. For his role in the film, Gooding won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and he was reportedly paid $600,000 for the film. Other films Gooding has starred in include: Men of Honor in 2000, opposite Robert De Niro; Snow Dogs in 2002; and What Dreams May Come in 1998, alongside Robin Williams. What Dreams May Come brought Gooding $1,500,000.
Gooding starred in a string of unsuccessful comedies that did poorly at the box office and with the critics, eventually prompting Gooding to make the decision to stop agreeing to star in comedies.
Gooding decided to branch out from acting to producing with the film, A Murder of Crows. Although the film was not successful commercially, it has earned cult status among fans of murder mysteries.
In 2002 he was presented with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One year later he received critical acclaim for his role in Radio as a mentally handicapped man.
Gooding met his wife, Sara Kapfer in 1986 while they were still in high school. They married in 1994 and currently have three children together: Spencer, born in 1994; Mason, born in 1996; and Piper, born in 2005. The family resides in Studio City, California. YUDDY |
