Dakota Fanning Bio

Dakota Fanning Biography

She has performed alongside some of the most noted names in Hollywood, including Denzel Washington, Sean Penn, and Robert De Niro. She's stolen the show as a guest on series like, Friends, The Practice, Spin City, Malcolm in The Middle, and TV's highest rated drama, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. It's safe to say that twelve year old child actress Dakota Fanning has come a long way from the farmer's daughter, born Hannah Dakota Fanning on February 23, 1994, in Conyers, Georgia. The product of an athletic family, her father, Steven, played professional baseball and mother, Joy, was a tennis player, Dakota was bitten by the acting bug at the tender age of five.

The little Georgia peach made her acting debut in a Georgia State Lottery commercial featuring musical genius Ray Charles. For Dakota, luck became a lady following the lottery gig. Dakota was featured in a Tide commercial, before her big break came a year later with a role on the long running NBC hit drama ER. Her role as a girl with leukemia injured in a car accident remains one of her favorite roles to date: "I got to wear a neck brace and nose tubes for the two days I worked," she gleefully recalls of the role.

It was her role as the bright young daughter of a mentally ill man (portrayed by Penn) in the 2002 film I Am Sam that took Dakota from a young Southern blonde to a modern day Shirley Temple. She became the youngest person ever nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for her supporting role in the film. Catherine Zeta Jones took the award for her role in Chicago, but Dakota did win a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for her work in I Am Sam later in the year. The eight-year-old was too short to reach the podium so she delivered her acceptance speech from the strong arms of comedian Orlando Bloom.

More success followed in 2003. That year Dakota helped bring to life Dr. Seuss' timeless tale The Cat In The Hat, where she was able to work with funny man Mike Myers. Dakota teamed up with twenty-something starlet Brittany Murphy for Uptown Girls, the story of a stone faced little girl and her carefree but immature nanny. The film garnered a lukewarm reception. Dakota was also a part of bringing classic literature to life once again with the premiere of Charlotte's Web in winter of 2006.

Dakota spent the next two years working with Hollywood legends and directors. In 2004 she was matched with Oscar winning actors and directors, Denzel Washington and Robert De Niro in Man on Fire and Hide and Seek consecutively. The latter was ill received by the public, but Dakota turned in a critically acclaimed performance.

In 2005 Dakota starred with Tom Cruise in the Steven Spielberg film, War of the Worlds. Spielberg expressed astonishment at the eleven-year-old's incredible talent. Yet it wouldn't be Hollywood if there were no bitterness to go with the sweetness. During a 2005 E! Network event self-proclaimed D-list comedienne Kathy Griffin made a joke about Dakota entering rehab; a dig at the countless child stars like Todd Bridges, Mary-Kate Olsen, and Jodie Sweetin who went  astray.

When she's not rubbing elbows with Tinsel Town royalty, Dakota enjoys reading and working with the American Red Cross as a part of their Celebrity Cabinet. Her voiceover work with the Disney Channel as a Young Kim Possible and Lilo of the Lilo and Stitch series also kept the young star busy during her early years in Hollywood.

The summer of 2006 saw Dakota landing the role of an abused and raped child in the movie Hounddog which was described as, ‘a dark story of abuse, violence and Elvis Presley adulation in the rural South." Dakota was interviewed on several talk shows at that time and merely passed the controversy off saying, It's not really happening," she told Reuters. "It's a movie, and it's called acting."

Fanning’s career went from strength to strength in 2006 when she became the youngest member in history of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science

In March and April 2007, Dakota played the role of Anne Hagen in the movie Winged Creatures, alongside Kate Beckinsale, Guy Pearce, Josh Hutcherson, Forest Whitaker and Jennifer Hudson. The role saw her playing a young girl who witnessed the murder of her father and then turns to religion in the aftermath.

Academy award winning Jennifer Hudson became a close friend of Dakota as the pair starred in the 2008 movie The Secret Life of Bees. The movie was released just ahead of the murders of Hudson’s brother, mother in nephew in 2008 and Dakota became a support to Hudson as she fought through the grief. Along with Hudson the movie starred Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo and Alicia Keys.

In February 2009 saw Fanning starring in the movie Push in the role of Cassie Holmes, a young girl with psychic powers who stars alongside Chris Evans in the movie where the two find themselves ensconced in a chase from a U.S. government agency in Hong Kong who are tracking a group of young Americans who possess telekinetic and clairvoyant powers.

Quite contrary to her role in Push, that same month and year Dakota also released another movie, Coraline, an animation where Dakota’s voice was used for the main character. She was teamed up with UK comedy duo Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French who's voices were used for the two old ladies in the movie.
