Dan Futterman With the release of the movie ‘A Mighty Heart’, the film adaptation from the book penned by Mariane Pearl, Dan took on what was probably to date, the highlight of his acting career, portraying the slaughtered journalist Daniel Pearl, being directed by Brad Pitt and starring alongside Angelina Jolie, all in one movie. Dan Futterman was born in Silver Spring, Maryland on June 8th 1967 to parents who worked as a psychiatrist and a lawyer. He spent his childhood growing up in Larchmont, New York. Dan attended Mamaroneck High School in Mamaroneck, New York and his university days were spent at Columbia University, New York, where he graduated in 1989. Dan’s first stage role was in ‘Club Soda’ in 1991 followed by ‘Angels in America’ in 1993, ‘A Fair Country’ in 1996 and ‘Dealer’s Choice’ in 1997. Between his stage appearances Dan launched his television and movie career and his first movie, ‘The Fisher King’ saw him starring with Jeff Bridges and in the 1998 television film ‘Thicker than Blood’ he starred with Mickey Rourke. One of his best known TV roles is as the brother of the central character, Amy Brenneman’s, Amy, in ‘Judging Amy’ in which he also had the honour of calling Tyne Daly his mother.
1996 saw Dan appearing in the comedy movie ‘The Birdcage’ with Robin Williams, Gene Hackman and Calista Flockhart. And in 1999 he had a small role for one episode in the well received ‘Sex and the City’ series, when he found himself working with the four vixens, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon. Dan is married to writer Anya Epstein, the daughter of the Boston Red Sox General Manager, Theo Epstein and together they have four children, one son and three daughters. Dan’s love of acting saw him making the leap from appearing in movies to writing the screenplays. In 2005 he wrote the screenplay for the movie based on the life of Truman Capote, ‘Capote’ which starred Philip Seymour Hoffman, as Capote and Allie Mickelson. The movie also won an Oscar. ‘Capote’ gained Dan an Oscar nomination for the Best Adapted Screenplay. Once again returning to the front side of the camera, in June 2007, Dan accepted the role of the murdered journalist, Daniel Pearl in ‘A Mighty Heart’ the movie adapted from the book written by Mariane Pearl and starring Jolie and directed by her husband, Brad Pitt.
