Carvey was born on June 2, 1955, in Missoula, Montana. When he was three, his parents moved the family to San Carlos, California, and encouraged him to pursue music by giving him his first drum kit. He attended Carlmont High School in Belmont, California, and went on to attend San Francisco State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in communications.
He earned a small part in the 1981 horror film, Halloween II, starring Jamie Lee Curtis. His next role was starring in the short-lived television sitcom, One of the Boys in 1982, alongside Mickey Rooney, Nathan Lane, and Meg Ryan.

Carvey based the character on women he knew from the church he attended growing up. One of his other original characters on the show, Garth Algar, became the basis of Carvey’s spin off movie, Wayne ’s World.
Carvey left the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1993 and joined up with Mike Myers to create Wayne’s World the movie, which was released in 1992. The success of the first film led to the sequel, Wayne’s World 2, released in 1993.
NBC then offered Carvey the position of host of Late Night Show after David Letterman left to host his own show on CBS. Carvey, who was a big fan of Letterman, turned down their offer causing the network a great deal of embarrassment.
In 1996, Carvey starred in The Dana Carvey Show, which was critically acclaimed but also short-lived. The show was responsible for launching The Ambiguously Gay Duo cartoon created by Robert Smigel.
In 1997, Carvey was scheduled to undergo open-heart surgery for a blocked artery, but the doctors operated on the wrong artery. As a result, Carvey sued for medical malpractice and was awarded $7.5 million in damages. He has reportedly given everything he made in the suit to charity. Carvey has had five corrective surgeries thus far.
His last film to date was the comedy, Master of Disguise in 2002, which raked in about $40 million at the box office. Carvey has since decided to retire from the entertainment world for the time being while he raises his family. He currently has two sons, Dex and Thomas, with wife Paula Swaggerman, whom he married in 1983. YUDDY |
