Dane CookComedic actor Dane Cook was born on March 18, 1972, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dane attended Arlington High School, and had a Roman Catholic upbringing. He found his funny bone as a teenager, when his father (former radio personality, George Cook) let him loose with a tape recorder and microphone. Dane’s early influences include comedic greats Bill Cosby, Johnny Carson, George Carlin, and Red Skelton. Dane became inspired one night in his teens while watching a Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Martin Short performing his character Ed Grimley. He decided at that moment that his goal was to eventually be on the show.
At age eighteen Dane dove into the stand-up comedy circuit, and was soon performing steadily in Boston, as well as Los Angeles. At the same time, Dane was also trying his hand at acting, and landed five episodes in the short-lived ABC series Maybe This Time alongside Marie Osmond and Betty White.
In 1999, Dane hit the big-screen when he landed a sweet role in Mystery Men as "The Waffler" – a hero who gets his super-human powers from a waffle iron and "truth syrup." That same year, Dane also starred in the straight-to-video Dennis Rodman flick, Simon Sez. Meanwhile, Dane continued his stand-up pursuits during the mid-90s, appearing on Comedy Central's stand-up comedy showcase Premium Blend, as well as Comics Come Home hosted by Denis Leary and Boston Bruin's Cam Neely.
Dane has invested both his time and money in the Internet to further his career. He spent $25,000 from his own savings and retirement accounts to launch his own interactive and official website, DaneCook.com. He is also often referred to as "the most popular guy on MySpace" (next to the site’s founder Tom Anderson). In a move that is virtually unheard of for celebrity MySpace pages, Dane approved every friend request he received. As a result, he currently has over 1.5 million MySpace friends.
In 2003, Dane released his first comedy album, Harmful If Swallowed. Also that year, he wrote, directed, and starred in 8 Guys. In 2005, Dane revved up the publicity machine by launching his nationwide tour, Tourgasm, to promote his second album Retaliation. Debuting at #4 on Billboard magazine's Top Albums chart, it became the most successful comedy album debut since the Steve Martin album A Wild and Crazy Guy (1979).
On December 3, 2005, Dane realized his life-long dream of hosting Saturday Night Live. Performing the longest monologue in the show's history with a handheld microphone, Dane’s episode received the show’s highest ratings of the season.
In 2005, Cook started his own company to produce his albums and videos, named Superfinger Entertainment. The name derives from a hand gesture, which Dane has described as an upgrade to giving someone the finger.
The year 2006 has been good for Dane. He was named in Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the year, and also starred in Employee of the Month alongside pop star Jessica Simpson, with whom he has been romantically linked. Dane is currently working on his television pilot, Cooked, as well as filming psychological thriller Mr. Brooks, which also stars Kevin Costner. YUDDY |
