Daniel Craig BiographyThere’s nothing secret about Daniel Craig's career since he was asked to be the sixth actor to portray James Bond in EON Productions’ film series of 007 movies. One of England’s famous faces, Craig’s career has gone from struggling youth actor to that of world acclaim.
Daniel Craig was born March 2, 1968, in Cheshire, England, to working-class parents. Though his parents separated when he was young, Craig’s mother remained the driving force behind his future career as an actor. Craig starred in school plays from the age of six, and pursued an acting career throughout school. He played roles in plays with his high school theater and left at the age of sixteen to audition for the National Youth Theatre (NYT) in Manchester. He was accepted into the program and moved to London where he toured with NYT and began to initiate his entrance into Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
As a struggling young actor working in restaurants for money, Craig eventually gained entrance into Guildhall, where he studied alongside fellow actors Ewan McGregor and Joseph Fiennes. He graduated in 1991 and made his film debut in 1992 in The Power of One. Craig also starred in the BBC series Our Friends in the North.
In 2001, Craig gained international attention starring opposite Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This led to a role in the Oscar-winning film Road to Perdition, starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman in 2002. Craig’s career was picking up speed and he also played numerous roles in smaller films and television shows. In addition, he landed a few lead roles, including in the 2003 movie Sylvia, where Craig starred opposite Gwenyth Paltrow. Then, in 2005, Craig appeared in Steven Spielberg’s Munich .
On October 14, 2005, Daniel Craig officially became the sixth actor to portray James Bond agent 007, and the only actor to date to have been born after the release of the first James Bond film, Dr. No in 1962. Out of all Craig’s Bond predecessors, Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan, Craig is the first blonde to portray Bond. He signed a three-film contract with EON, and the first, Casino Royale, opened in November of 2006; the second film is scheduled for release in late 2007. It is unknown whether or not Craig will opt to play Bond in the third film.
Craig landed a role in His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass, based on the Philip Pullman novel, where he worked again with his Casino Royale co-star Eva Green. Craig revealed in late 2007 that he would remain the face of James Bond for the next movie which was released in November 2008. The movie had the unusal name, Quantum of Solace, which sees James searching for just that, as he recovers from a broken heart after Vesper Lund left him high and dry at the end of Casino Royale. In his personal life Daniel had no such thing as a broken heart when in March 2008 he broke the hearts of millions of female fans when he announced that he had placed a huge diamond on the finger of girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell and planned to marry her after completing the filming of his movie Quantum of Solace.
