Danity Kane Bio

Danity Kane Biography

R&B girl group Danity Kane first came together in 2005. They were the third group to emerge out of Making the Band, a reality series featured on MTV.

The band was ultimately formed with Shannon Bex, Aubrey ODay, Dawn Richard, Wanita Woodgette (Wanita “D Woods” Woodgette), and Aundrea Fimbres. The band produces under the Bad Boy Records label, famously headed by Sean “Diddy” Combs (formerly Puff Daddy).

The band was compiled by Combs and several other key people. These included Laurie Ann Gibson as choreographer, Doc Holiday as vocal trainer, and Johnny Wright as a talent manager.

The prospective band members were moved into a New York City loft and given extensive dance and voice training. They were also given the opportunity to hone their performing skills as they opened for the Backstreet Boys in Bristow, Virginia.

Primarily a pop and R&B group, Danity Kane’s all girl format has proved popular for the new band. Their debut album hit the shelves in 2006. A self-titled project, it sold over a million copies, far exceeding the expectations of everyone who considered the band a manufactured product doomed to mediocrity.

Danity Kane produced the popular singles “Show Stopper” and “Ride For You,” both of which earned the band exposure and fans. The album even knocked Christina Aguilera from the Billboard 200 number one slot.

The album was still marred, however, by mixed reviews. Not hurting for a production team, the album was worked on by music heavy hitters Timbaland, Ryan Leslie, Mario Winans, and others.

From February to May of 2007, Danity Kane increased their popularity when they toured with popular burlesque troupe gone pop band, the Pussycat Dolls.

Despite the momentum of the group, rumors began circulating in mid 2007 that the band had called it quits. Several quotes were taken out of context, and members of the band pursued professional projects outside Danity Kane, all of which fueled the breakup speculation.

Finally fed up with the talk, the band released an official statement on July 25, 2007 stating that they were not only together but working on a new album.

The product of that work was Welcome to the Dollhouse, their second studio effort. Initially intended for a 2007 release, it was finally complete and on shelves by March 18, 2008. The album was preceded by the chart topping single “Damaged.”

Kane’s music can also be heard on the Step Up 2 soundtrack—a film which featured newcomer Briana Evigan and Robert Hoffman.
