Danny Bonaduce Bio

Danny Bonaduce Should Hollywood was ever to be short of a poster child for the cautionary tale of the damage that can be inflicted on a child star, in the absence of Drew Barrymore, Tatum ONeal, Neil Patrick Harris and of course Judy Garland, to name but a few, there is always Danny Bonaduce and his stories of the traumas that haunted his life following early stardom and an unstable home life. Danny Bonaduce, was born Dante Danny Bonaduce in Broomall, Pennsylvania on August 13th 1959, the son of Betty Steck and established TV writer and producer, Joseph Bonaduce who it was rumoured inflicted both physical and emotional abuse on the family. Bonaduce attended the California Prep High School in Encino where he rubbed shoulders with future music phenomena Michael Jackson and Christian Brando, son of Marlon Brando, a trio of trauma struck child stars. With his appealing freckled face and red hair Danny began his acting career at the age of four but it was his role during the early seventies in The Partridge Family that really made Bonaduce a star. With his screen mother Shirley Jones, brother David Cassidy and sister Susan Dey, the younger son, Danny Partridge was always the smart mouthed wise-cracking bad boy.
The years in The Partridge Family bought the young Danny wealth and fame for a period of just four years after which the show folded and along with it, Danny’s career. Within months of the end of his role as Danny Partridge, at the age of sixteen, Bonaduce saw his career entering a long period of inactivity, apart from the occasional appearances on shows such as Fantasy Island with Ricardo Mantalban and The Love Boat which had an endless line of celebrity guest stars such as, Courteney Cox, Jamie Lee Curtis and Linda Evans. Bonaduce’s next contribution to the film industry came in the role of Millard Kensington in the 1975 movie, ‘Murder on Flight 502’ which saw him starring with Farrah Fawcett and Sonny Bono and later in the less than ‘B’ rate movie, H.O.T.S in 1979. With the lack of roles and recognition, Bonaduce soon found himself battling poverty and drug addiction and undergoing counseling for drug possession in 1985. Danny lived with his mother until well into his adulthood until he finally married a Japanese woman who was merely seeking her green card. Setsuko Hattori and Danny separated within six months of marriage and he was indicted for yet another drug bust in 1990. The one right move Bonduce made during his years of drug and alcohol abuse was marrying his second wife, Gretchen Hillmer, in November 1990. After being set up on a blind date, the two married the night they met and together they have had two children, Isabella and Dante. During this period Danny developed his radio career in Philadelphia, Phoenix, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles and at on point as a guest on the Howard Stern Show.
2001 saw the beginning of a comeback for Bonaduce when he co-hosted ‘The Other Half’ along with Mario Lopez and Dick Clark. The show lasted for two years and following that in 2005 he was the star of the self named show, ‘Breaking Bonaduce’. The series featured his home life, with wife and children in tow but as the series progressed the actor’s behavior became more and more unacceptable with outbursts of confessions of marital infidelity and the consuming alcohol and drugs, that the producers threatened to cancel the show altogether unless he entered into re-habilitation. Bonaduce penned his autobiography, ‘Random Acts of Badness’, detailing his fall into and recovery from drug addiction. The one interest that has remained constant throughout Danny’s life is his love of martial arts. He studied under Chuck Norris for 20 years and holds black belts in several forms of the sport. He won the 1980 and 1981 International Championships. In 2007 Bonaduce announced on several shows, including Larry King Live that he had spent an entire year free from alcohol and drugs. ABB |
