Daniel Peter Masterson was born March 13, 1976 in Albertson, New York. His parents are Carol Masterson and Peter Masterson, his manager and an insurance agent respectively. His parents split, however, in 1984. Masterson has one full sibling, fellow actor Christopher Masterson. He is most known for playing Francis on the popular sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. Masterson is a practicing member of the Church of Scientology, as is his family. Entering the world of acting from a young age, Masterson’s onscreen debut came in 1988 with Jake and the Fatman opposite William Conrad. He then landed a recurring role on the short-lived series Joe’s Life with Mary Page Keller, Mimi Kennedy, and Peter Onorati. Once again becoming a series regular on a new series, Masterson’s next notable gig was with Extreme. Despite a strong cast, which included James Brolin and Julie Bowen, the show was axed after only one season.
Bouncing around film and television, Masterson gained additional exposure from 1996 to 1988 when he portrayed Justin Thorpe on Cybill. Cybill Shepherd played the title character while supporting roles were handled by Christine Baranski and Alicia Witt. But it was 1998 that offered him his greatest role to date. In that year, he was enlisted to partake in the new sitcom That ‘70s Show. Playing the rebellious Steven Hyde, his costars included Laura Prepon, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Wilmer Valderrama, and Topher Grace. The show went on to run for an extremely successful eight seasons, effectively making Masterson a household name. Since the end of the series, he is noted for his turn in the Gregg Araki comedy Smiley Face. He appeared with Anna Faris, Adam Brody, and others. Most recently, he completed shooting for the Blair Underwood directed The Bridge to Nowhere and Capers. Outside of acting, he is noted for his co-ownership of the restaurant Dolce, which he got off the ground with the help of Kutcher and Valderrama. Masterson is also noted for his DJing at various night clubs.
In his personal life, Masterson has been romantically linked to Chrissie Carnell. They were together from 1995 to 2002, and they even lived together during this time. When the relationship dissolved, Masterson was subsequently linked to his ‘70s costar Kunis followed by Bobette Riales and Bijou Phillips. He is currently with English model Agyness Deyn. |
