Actress Daryl Hannah was born on December 3, 1960, in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up, Daryl shied away from social contact and was diagnosed as "borderline autistic." Her introverted nature and struggles with insomnia attracted her to the escapism of movies at a young age. She was also active in ballet and soccer, playing for the boys team at Francis W. Parker School in Lincoln Park. After graduating high school, Daryl went on to major in theater at the University of Southern California.

Daryl made her big-screen debut at the age of eighteen in the 1978 horror film, The Fury. She continued to score interesting roles in various films throughout the early 80s, including android Pris in Ridley Scott's cult-classic Blade Runner in 1982, which also starred Harrison Ford. In 1984, Daryl was cast as a mermaid in Ron Howard’s Splash, also starring Tom Hanks. During the late 80s, Daryl appeared in Steel Magnolias (1989) with Sally Field, Dolly Parton, and Julia Roberts. Hannah also starred in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street in 1987, with Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen, and Martin Sheen. In 1987, she was cast in the title role opposite Steve Martin in the quirky comedy Roxanne.

During the early 90s, Daryl starred in and co-produced the television movie Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1993). She also appeared in Grumpy Old Men in 1993 and its sequel, Grumpier Old Men in 1995.

Although Daryl seemed be lying low in her career throughout the late 90s and early 2000s, she actually knew about her role as assassin Elle Driver in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004) almost a decade in advance. Daryl and her co-star in the films, Uma Thurman, who played The Bride, reportedly did not get along and kept a distance from each other while staying at a London hotel for the premiere of Kill Bill Volume 2.

In 1995, Daryl was chosen by Empire magazine as #96 on their list of the 100 Sexiest Stars in Film History. In 2003, at the age of forty-two, Hannah was featured in Playboy magazine, although she was said to be unhappy with the pictorial representation of her.

Although Daryl has never married, she has been romantically involved with high-profile personalities. Perhaps the most famous of which was a long-term relationship with lawyer and publisher John F Kennedy Jr., whose mother, Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis was rumored to have disapproved of the relationship. Daryl has also dated singers Jackson Browne and Robbie Williams, and actor Val Kilmer.

Daryl’s passion for environmental causes is reflected in both her fierce activism and day-to-day lifestyle. On June 13, 2006, Hannah was arrested for tying herself to a Walnut Tree at the South Central Farm in south-central Los Angeles. She had been protesting the eviction of the farmers from the site, which was established to allow city dwellers to grow their own food in the aftermath of the 1992 L.A. riots. Daryl has also been a vegetarian since age eleven, uses solar power, and drives a 1983 El Camino car which runs on vegetable oil. She has noted that the french-fry grease that powers her car has a toxicity level somewhere between table salt and maple syrup.

Daryl has recently started a video blog, dhlovelife.com, which features a collection of short videos that capture people around the world helping each other and the environment.
