Dave ChappelleSocially conscious comedian Dave Chappelle was born on August 25, 1973, in Washington, D.C. Growing up in both Maryland and Ohio, Dave was inspired by legendary comedian Richard Pryor. At just fourteen years old, Dave made his stage debut at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, in a performance that turned into an early taste of rejection when Dave was booed off stage. After his parents divorced, Dave and his mother, a Unitarian Universalist minister, moved back to Washington, D.C., Dave graduated from renowned performing arts high school Duke Ellington, with a major in literary and theater arts.
At age nineteen, Dave made his first small-screen appearance on Def Comedy Jam. The following year, he appeared in the Mel Brook's film Robin Hood: Men in Tights as well as Undercover Blues with Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid. Throughout the mid- to late-90s, Dave made various appearances on television, in low-budget films and in comedy clubs. Around this time, he also snagged his own television show, The Dave Chappelle Project; however, the pilot was not picked up. Dave then went on to star in the short-lived ABC sitcom Buddies in 1996; and also landed a role in the 1996 remake of The Nutty Professor, with Eddie Murphy and Jada Pinkett Smith. In 1998, Dave got his breakthrough role in the pothead comedy Half Baked, which he produced and co-wrote along with Neal Brennan. Also that year, Dave converted to Islam.
It wasn’t until 2003 that Dave took another crack at his own television show. Chappelle's Show aired on Comedy Central to critical and commercial success. By the end of season two, Chappelle’s Show had become one of the highest rated shows on cable, and the first season DVD set had become the best-selling television show DVD. As a result, Comedy Central's parent company, Viacom, reportedly offered Dave a $55 million contract, which included a portion of the DVD sales. In turn, Dave would do two more years of the show with room for other projects on the side. Memorable sketches featured on Chappelle's Show included a blind white supremacist who does not realize he is black; as well as Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories, a segment featuring Dave impersonating funk forefather Rick James and purple pop singer Prince.
In 2004, Michel Gondry directed the documentary Dave Chappelle's Block Party, which covers an event Dave hosted in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City. In February and March 2006, Dave toured various cities to promote the documentary, which featured a reunion of rap group The Fugees' Lauren Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel.
During the third season of Chappelle’s Show and at the height of his success, Dave made headlines when he abruptly disappeared from the public eye. As reports broke that the comedian had checked himself into a psychiatric facility in , rumors swirled that Dave was suffering drug addiction or a nervous breakdown. Dave denied the reports, and maintained that he had left the country to reflect on his career as he was unhappy with the direction that Chappelle Show’s had taken. On August 3, 2005, co-star Charlie Murphy stated during a TV Guide interview that he believed Dave would not return to the show.
The latter half of 2005 saw Dave performing comedy shows in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Newport, Kentucky. During that time, Dave also gave an interview to James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio and discussed his sudden retreat from the spotlight and sojourn to South Africa. He also did an interview with Oprah in early 2006, explaining the stress he was under at the time and the added pressure the show’s success gave him, stating, "The hardest thing to do is to be true to yourself, especially when everybody is watching."
In addition to appearing in an ad for Right Guard deodorant, Dave is perhaps one of the only celebrities to have endorsed both Coca-Cola and its competitor, Pepsi. In one of his stand-up routines, Dave revealed "if you want to know the truth...can't even taste the difference. Surprise!"
Along with his wife Elaine and their two sons, Dave currently lives on a farm just outside Yellow Springs, Ohio. YUDDY |
