David Paul Boreanaz was born May 16, 1969, in Buffalo, New York, and subsequently raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents are Dave Roberts and Patti Boreanaz, a weatherman and travel agent respectively. Raised in a Catholic home, Boreanaz attended Malvern Preparatory School located in Malvern, Pennsylvania. He pursued his secondary education at Ithaca College.
Like so many actors before him, Boreanaz moved to Hollywood to better his chances of finding employment in the entertainment industry. And like so many actors before him, he was discovered in a very unusual way. While walking his dog in a local park, a producer noticed his striking features and typical Hollywood good looks.
With his new connection, Boreanaz began earning small roles in film and television. His first part was a non-credited role in the 1993 skiing film Aspen Extreme, starring Peter Berg, Teri Polo, and William McNamara. Shortly after, his second role (still not credited) was in the tepidly received Best of the Best 2, with Eric Roberts, Chris Penn, and sometimes actor Wayne Newton.
Boreanaz finally had his name attached to a role when he appeared on one episode of the dysfunctional family comedy series Married…With Children, starring opposite Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate, David Faustino, and Ed O Neill.
After these appearances, however, work proved slow and difficult to come by. Boreanaz would not appear on screen again until 1996 in the little-seen but well-loved comedy horror Macabre Pair of Shorts. Perhaps it was his role in this vampire flick that caught the attention of Joss Whedon. Whatever the reasoning, Boreanaz was cast in Whedon’s new television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, along with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Seth Green, Anthony Head, James Marsters, and Charisma Carpenter.
Appearing regularly from 1997 to 1999, the show’s extreme popularity made Boreanaz a star right along with his Buffy co-stars. His enigmatic character, Angel, even warranted a successful spin-off simply titled Angel, which ran from 1999 to 2004.
Capitalizing on his television stardom, Boreanaz translated his fame to the big screen. He took a starring role in the 2001 slasher Valentine with Denise Richards and Katherine Heigl, as well as a role in the 2002 romantic comedy I’m With Lucy, opposite Monica Potter, Craig Bierko, John Hannah, Henry Thomas, Gael Garcia Bernal, and Anthony LaPaglia.
Boreanaz teamed up again with Lucy co-star Thomas for the 2005 crime drama The Hard Easy. But it was 2005 that would also bring his next most successful project—the homicide-centered television series Bones. The show began in 2005 and is still continuing its successful run with co-stars Emily Deschanel, Michaela Conlin, Eric Millegan, TJ Thyne, and Tamara Taylor. Guest stars have included Ryan O Neal and Stephen Fry.
Additional projects include lending his voice to the RPG videogame Kingdom Hearts in 2002. Other actors involved include Haley Joel Osment, David Gallagher, Hayden Panettiere, Billy Zane, Mandy Moore, and Lance Bass.
Boreanaz is currently filming Our Lady of Victory with Ellen Burstyn, and he is in production for the animated film Justice League: The New Frontier. Other tentatively attached actors include Brooke Shields, Neil Patrick Harris, Lucy Lawless, and Kyle MacLachlan.
Boreanaz currently lives in Los Angeles, California, with his new wife, actress and model Jaime Bergman. They wed on November 24, 2001, and welcomed their son in May 2002. He was previously married to Ingrid Quinn from 1997 to 1999.
