David BowieBorn as David Robert Hayward Jones on January 8, 1947, the English singer and songwriter changed his surname to Bowie in the 1960s to avoid confusion with the lead singer of The Monkees, Davy Jones. He is consistently listed as one of the richest British born pop stars in the world.
Bowie was born in Brixton, London, where he lived with his Welsh father and Irish-Catholic mother until he was six years old.
When he was eighteen he got into a fight with a friend who punched him in the eye. His eye was so badly damaged that doctors were unable to fully repair it and his pupil is now permanently dilated. As a result of the injury, one of Bowie’s eyes (both of which are blue) appears darker than the other. Bowie also has faulty depth perception in the injured eye and can only see brown through it.
Bowie states that his first musical influence was Little Richard and that his earliest musical goal was to play the saxophone in Little Richard’s group. Instead, he played in clubs for various blues groups throughout the 1960s.
In 1967 Bowie released his first solo album, David Bowie, for Deram records. One single on the album, "The Laughing Gnome," became a cult-classic B-side. But Bowie didn’t achieve commercial breakthrough until 1969 with his single, "Space Oddity," which was released at the time of the first moon landing. Bowie has always insisted that the single’s release was not done to deliberately coincide with the landing.
Over the next few years he recorded a few other albums before releasing Diamond Dogs in 1974, the album that became his first major commercial success in the . It was the number one selling album in the and went to number five on the American charts.
In 1981, Queen released the song "Under Pressure," which was co-written and performed by Bowie . Two years later he released his first blockbuster album, Let’s Dance which catapulted him to superstar status. The title track went to number one on both the and the charts. He followed up Let’s Dance with the dance-oriented album, Tonight, in 1984. The album was poorly received by critics.
In 1989 Bowie formed a regular band called Tin Machine with Reeves Gabrels, Tony Sales, and Hunt Sales. The hard-rocking quartet received a lukewarm reception from the public but managed to release a couple of albums before Bowie left the group in 1991.
During the 1990s Bowie experimented with music styles and released a few albums with soul, jazz, and hip-hop influences. In 1998 he recorded a song for The Rugrats Movie called "Sky Life" that was edited out in the final cut. In 1999 he composed a soundtrack for the computer game Omikron: The Nomad Soul, and launched the internet service provider, BowieNet.
In 2003, a report in the Sunday Express named Bowie as the second-richest entertainer in the United Kingdom, behind Sir Paul McCartney.
For 2007 Bowie has plans to curate and perform in the Highline, an abandoned railway park in New York , with other musicians and artists. Events such as art showings, performances, and a taste of the New York Nightlife will culminate in a large outdoor Bowie Concert. It will be his first big show in three years.
Bowie lives in New York City with his second wife, the Somali-born model, Iman Abdulmajid. The couple married on April 24, 1992, and have one daughter together, Alexandria (Lexi) Zahra Jones, born August 15, 2000. YUDDY |
