Growing up, Duchovny attended The Collegiate School for Boys located in Manhattan, where he played on the varsity basketball team with the hopes of winning a scholarship before an injury to his eye sidelined his athletic career.
Duchovny went on to graduate from Princeton University, New York, where he was a member of the Charter Club. He then obtained his Master’s degree in English literature from Yale University and was just shy of receiving his Ph.D. before he dropped out. While attending Yale he was classmates with actress Jennifer Beals, whom he recommended for a role on The X-Files.
While attending Yale, Duchovny began commuting to New York City to take acting classes and soon began starring in off-Broadway plays. He chose to leave school just before graduating in order to pursue acting full time.
Duchovny’s career began when he landed a part in a Lowenbrau beer advertisement in 1987. He then received a recurring role as a DEA agent on the series,Twin Peaks, which starred Kyle MacLachlan. In 1993, Duchovny landed the role on the sci-fi series The X-Files, which made him a star, alongside Gillian Anderson. The series became the first big hit on FOX Networks and soon led Duchovney to a starring role in The X-Files movie in 1998. While still working on The X-Files, Duchovny caused a controversy when the show moved its filming location to Vancouver, , to Los Angeles, California , in 1998. Although residents of Vancouver claim he was poking fun at the city, Duchovny maintains that the only reason he requested the show be moved to Los Angeles was because his wife lived and worked in LA.
