It was during this time that he taught himself how to play the drums in his bedroom. He has cited John Bonham as one of his greatest influences while learning to play the drums. As tribute to his influence, Grohl got Bonham’s logo tattooed on his wrist.
Grohl landed an audition with the D.C. based band, Scream, at the age of sixteen, and when he got the job as drummer for the band he decided to drop out of high school to focus on his music. Grohl spent the next four years recording and touring extensively with the band. It was while touring with Scream that Grohl befriended Buzz Osborne of the band The Melvins. Osborne was responsible for introducing Grohl to Kurt Cobain and Chris Novoselic.
Scream fell apart after the bass player decided to drop out and go his own separate way. Grohl decided to call Osborne for advice on what he should do next. Osborne knew that Cobain was a big fan of Grohl’s drumming and gave Grohl the number of Cobain and Novoselic up in Seattle. Grohl was then invited up to Seattle where he caught a Nirvana show, then auditioned as the drummer for the band and was quickly accepted into Nirvana.
Grohl and the rest of Nirvana signed with DGC Records and began recording their debut studio album in 1991. When Nevermind was released it became a huge success. Although Grohl continued to write songs during this time, he did not feel that they would contribute to Nirvana in a positive way so he recorded them individually over the next year and released his cassette, Pocketwatch, in 1992 under the pseudonym, "Late!"
After Cobain’s death in 1994, Grohl was unsure as to whether he should continue to play the drums for other bands or perform his own music. By the end of 1994 Grohl recorded a 15-track demo and played all of the instruments himself.
Grohl ended up signing with Capitol Records and he then recruited other members of Nirvana to join his new band including William Goldsmith, Pat Smear, and Nate Mendel. They then took the demo Grohl recorded on his own and gave it a professional mix, which became the debut album of the Foo Fighters in July of 1995.
Grohl has been married twice. His first wife, Jennifer Youngblood, was a photographer; they were married from 1993 to 1997. He married his second wife, MTV producer Jordyn Blum in 2003 in Los Angeles . Guests to their wedding included Clive Davis, Jack Black, and Krist Novoselic. They welcomed their first daughter, Violet Maye, on April 15, 2006.
