David Hasselhoff Bio

David Hasselhoff

David Michael Hasselhoff (often called by his nickname, The Hoff) is one of the most recognizable faces on television. The Guinness Book of World Records lists him as the most watched television star in the world thanks to starring roles in the popular television shows, Knight Rider and Baywatch. He is worth more than $100,000,000.

Hasselhoff was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 17, 1952, and began acting at the age of seven. The first role he ever acted was as the character Mitchell Penn who became known for his famous quote, "You show bout dait!"

His parents and four sisters moved around a lot during Hasselhoff’s childhood. He attended the Marist High School in Atlanta, Georgia, but failed out of that school. He transferred to Lyons Township High School in the suburbs of Chicago from where he graduated. Today his image is on display in the Alumni Hall of Fame in the main corridor of the school.

Although Hasselhoff once had dreams of having a professional music career, he devoted most of his time and energy to studying acting. He attended both the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Chicago and the California Institute of Arts in Los Angeles .

In the 1970s he landed his first professional acting job as Dr. Snapper Foster on the CBS soap opera, The Young and the Restless. After playing this character for six years, NBC cast him in the starring role of Knight Rider as Michael Knight.

Hasselhoff stayed with Knight Rider until 1986. While with the show, he started up his music career by getting permission to produce an episode that focused on his singing talents. That episode (Let It Be Me) became the springboard for his 1985 debut album, Night Rocker.

He went on to release a couple of other albums, but didn’t receive much recognition for his musical work until 1989 when he recorded Looking for Freedom with German producer Jack White.

The album was released just as the Berlin Wall came down, and Hasselhoff performed songs from the album as people tore it down. The album went gold and triple platinum in and topped the country’s charts for three months. Since then he has had another six albums gone platinum in Europe .

In 1989, Hasselhoff returned to television with the premiere of Baywatch. The show was initially unsuccessful and was cancelled after one season. Hasselhoff believed in the show, invested his own money in it, and revived it while functioning as the show’s executive producer.

Baywatch ran from 1989 to 2001 and included stars such as Chris Fiore, Pamela Anderson, Erika Eleniak, Yasmine Bleeth, Susan Anton, and David Charvet

In 1996 Hasselhoff received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Over the next several years he acted in Broadway musicals and founded the charity Race for Life.

In January of 2006 Hasselhoff signed a contract with Pepsi to appear in a massive outdoor campaign. That same month he announced he was filing divorce from his second wife, Pamela Bach, who he had been married to for sixteen years. The divorce started out amicably but soon turned nasty when Bach accused Hasselhoff of violent behavior towards her.

After a bitter custody battle, the couple now shares custody of their two daughters, Taylor Ann, born May 5, 1990, and Hayley Amber, born August 26, 1992.

Hasselhoff currently lives in South Carolina.
