David Mattey Biography
American actor David Mattey has been appearing sporadically in film and television since the late 90s, but his career was marked by bit parts and tepidly received projects. That changed, however, in 2008 when he landed back to back roles in the big budget films Strange Wilderness and Hancock.
David Mattey was born November 5, 1969 in Rochester, New York.
On the education front, Mattey attended Virginia Tech. While there, he obtained an impressive three degrees—mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, and computer aided design.
Rather than directly utilize these degrees, however, Mattey decided instead to pursue acting. With acting in the family gene pool, Mattey is cousins with John Mattey (best known for his stint on As the World Turns). Today, Mattey uses his overt intelligence as a practicing member of Mensa.
Breaking into the world of acting, Mattey made his onscreen debut in a one-episode appearance of the soap opera As the World Turns. He then turned to Another World for two episodes over 1998 and 1999.
But it was 2000 that offered Mattey his first big break. In that year, he was cast as Toxic Avenger in Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV. Directed by Lloyd Kaufman, the horror comedy also featured Heidi Sjursen and Paul Kyrmse.
But finding steady work proved difficult, and as such, he took a hiatus until 2003.
Returning to bit parts in various television series, Mattey appeared in The District, Reno 911!, and Angel with David Boreanaz.
His film career continued with roles in Black Gulch and Paper Doll, both of which were released in 2003.
Staying within his established path of horror films and sci-fi inflected drama, Mattey also found work with The Incredible Torture Trio, Imagine, and House of the Dead 2 with Emmanuelle Vaugier and Ed Quinn.
In 2006, Mattey changed gears slightly when he played Capt. Chris Murray in the comedy short Truthus: A Family Holiday.
After a turn in 2007’s sci-fi bomb The Last Sentinel, Mattey broke into the mainstream in 2008.
In that year, he played Bigfoot in the comedy Strange Wilderness with Steve Zahn, Jonah Hill, Ashley Scott, and Justin Long.
He also landed a role in the big budget blockbuster Hancock from director Peter Berg. Playing Man Mountain, Mattey took to the screen with Hollywood A-listers Will Smith, Jason Bateman, and Charlize Theron. The film also featured Jae Head, Johnny Galecki, Thomas Lennon, and Eddie Marsan.
Launched with the popularity and exposure of Hancock, things are only looking up for Mattey. He has currently completed The Steamroom and is in post-production for Jack and the Beanstalk, Lonely Street, and Blood Shot.
He has also established an impressive career as a stunt man, working on films such as Epic Movie and Get Smart.
In his personal life, Mattey married Cristina Van Valkenburg on June 30, 2007. They are currently still together.
