Appearances in TV series and small to medium parts in films formed the early part of his career. David Schwimmer was a familiar face in recurring roles in series such as The Wonder Years, starring Fred Savage and Olivia d’Abo. He also did several episodes on LA Law and NYPD Blue, the top shows of the day. LA Law starred Richard A. Dysart, Harry Hamlin, Susan Dey, and Corbin Bernsen, and NYPD Blue made stars of Dennis Franz and David Caruso.
The big break came in Friends, which ran from 1994 through 2004. The story of a group of New York buddies, the show made stars of all six regulars. Alongside David Schwimmer were Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and Matthew Perry. The show attracted a lot of guest stars as well, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Freddie Prinze Jr., while Elliot Gould and Tom Selleck had recurring roles. David also directed some episodes.
David Schwimmer managed to fit in other work round his Friends commitments. In 1996, he took the male lead in the comic movie, The Pallbearer, directed by Matt Reeves, and co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Toni Collette. David did another comedy with Picking Up The Pieces, which Alfonso Arau directed and Woody Allen and Sharon Stone starred.
Band of Brothers was a critically acclaimed mini series, co-produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. Set in World War II and starring Damian Lewis, Donnie Wahlberg, and Ron Livingston, David Schwimmer impressed many in the role of an unpopular army Captain.
Life after Friends has been very busy for David Schwimmer. He debuted on the West End stage in 2005 in a play written by Neil LaBute called Some Girls, also starring Catherine Tate, Saffron Burrows, and Lesley Manville. David then hit Broadway in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, alongside Tim Daly and Zeljko Ivanek and directed by Jerry Zaks. Unfortunately, the reviews were very bad and the play closed.
The animated movie Madagascar was released in 2005, and featured the voice of David Schwimmer as Melman the giraffe; Ben Stiller and Chris Rock also provided voices. The film was a hit and David is planning to be involved in the sequel. Other future projects include a film that David will direct and act in called Run, Fat Boy, Run. Filming is scheduled to begin in summer of 2006 and it’s hoped that British comic actress Simon Pegg will star.
David Schwimmer has had many high profile girlfriends including Australian singer and actress Natalie Imbruglia. He’s also dated singer and model, Gina Lee, and Hawaiian model, Rochelle Sanchez Ovitt. It was reported that David had been seeing Kim Cattrall of Sex and the City fame but this was denied.
