McDermott was born in Toronto on November 16, 1966, and is probably best known for his role as Constable Turnbull on the Canadian show Due South from the mid-to-late 1990s. However, he’d already been acting since the end of the 80s, appearing in a number of TV series such as Friday the 13, My Secret Identity, Top Cops, Street Legal, Nancy Drew, The Outer Limits, and Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, as well as made-for-TV films such as Conspiracy of Silence; The Reckoning; The Forget-Me-Not Murders, starring Richard Crenna and Tyne Daly; Derby; Joe Torre: Curveballs Along the Way, with Paul Sorvino, Robert Loggia, Barbara Williams, and Isaiah Washington; and Jack Reed: Death and Vengeance, with Brian Dennehy and Charles S Dutton.
After his fame-making stint on Due South, McDermott’s most notable filmography has included recurring roles as Brenton Michaels from 1999 to 2002 in the TV series Earth: Final Conflict and as Alan Coyle in the series 1-800-Missing from 2003 to 2004. Also on the small screen, McDermott has more recently guest-starred on The Closer, starring Kyra Sedgwick, the wife of Kevin Bacon; and Without a Trace. Some of the actor’s recent films include The Skulls III; Kevin Costner’s Open Range, in which Robert Duvall and Annette Bening also starred; Against the Ropes, co-starring Meg Ryan and Omar Epps; and the TV movie Mind Over Murder, in which he was introduced to future bride, Tori Spelling.
McDermott and Spelling married in May of 2006, and had their first child together, Liam Aaron, in March 2007. McDermott was previously married to Mary Jo Eustace, a noted TV chef, from 1993 to 2006, and has a son with her, Jack Montgomery, born in 1998. The former couple also adopted a daughter, Lola, together, but McDermott no longer has custody of or responsibility toward her.
McDermott’s most recent undertaking involves producing the new project Tori & Dean: Inn Love, a reality show starring himself and his wife running and managing a bed and breakfast inn in California. Wife Spelling recently made headlines for becoming an official "reverend" via the Internet, allowing her to ordain and perform marriages; she’s already married gay couple Tony and Dex at her and McDermott’s B&B inn.
