Debbie Harry Bio

Debbie Harry

Regarded as the front runner of the Punk revolution in America this petit, blonde angel faced singer was destined to change the music scene in Europe, Australia and America in the 1970’s and 1980’s along with her band, Blondie.

Debbie Harry was born on July 1st 1945 in Miami Florida but at just three months of age she was adopted by Richard and Catherine Harry in Hawthorne, New Jersey. Her school years were spent at Hawthorne High School until she graduated in 1963. In the late 1960’s Debbie made the move to New York City where she found employment as a secretary for BBC Radio in New York. She stuck at that for just a year and then ventured off to become a cocktail waitress where she rubbed shoulders with the likes of Andy Warhol, a dancer and later she tried her hand as one of Hugh Hefner’s Playboy Bunnies.

Debbie’s career path changed when she began singing with a folk rock group in the early 1970’s called ‘Wind in the Willows’ and later joined a girl band trio called ‘The Stilettos’. While working with the group she met her long time boyfriend Chris Stein with whom she went on to form the band ‘Blondie’. The group quickly gained recognition and popularity in the New York club and birthplace of American punk ‘CBGB’, which became the forum for American punk and saw bands such as The Ramones. Debbie soon became the focus of the 1970's band ‘Blondie’ with her glamorous platinum blonde hair and creative musical style she propelled the band to mega stardom in Europe, the UK and Australia. Their first massive hit came in late 1977 with ‘Denis’ which hit the number two position in the British charts. During this time Debbie fronted the group wearing torn swimsuits, high heel shoes and glancing around with a vacant and sometimes dumb look.

t took a while longer for ‘Blondie’ to crack the American charts but success came with their world wide hit, ‘ Heart of Glass’ which went to number one both sides of the Atlantic. This was followed by a string of hits, ‘Call Me’, ‘The Tide is High’ and ‘Rapture’. However, the pressures of touring and the tensions within the group caused the band to split in 1984 leaving behind the legacy of having been the most successful New Wave band of the seventies. After the demise of ‘Blondie’ a cover of The Rolling Stones 'Wild Horses' became available as a bootleg copy.
However, at this point Debbie began her solo career, releasing her first album ‘Koo Koo’ which was a commercial failure and it was widely believed that she would never live up to the success of Blondie.  Her first single from the album ‘Backfired’ only reached number 28 in the charts.

Debbie decided to take a period of time off before she released her second single "Rockbird", to nurse a seriously ill Chris Stein. With "Rockbird", Debbie fared considerably better, scoring a number 2 hit in Britain and a number one hit in Australia.
In 1989, Debbie reinvented herself by and returned to the music scene, this time calling herself Deborah Harry and releasing the brilliantly seductive "Def Dumb and Blonde". The album showed Debbie’s diverse sounds, good sense of humour, retro punk, but most of all fun. The UK hit single was "I Want that Man", the album also charted well in the US, going platinum in Australia, and was followed by a world tour.

The mid 1990’s saw Debbie teaming up with Elvis Costello for a cover of 'Doncha Go Way Mad' on the album ‘Individually Twisted ‘which also features a re-recorded version of the song 'The Tide Is High', which she had previously had a hit with while a part of Blondie.
Deborah Harry also tried her skills as an actress, appearing in "Union City" with Sam McMurray "Videodrome" with James Woods, "Hairspray" alongside Sonny Bono and Jerry Stiller, and "Drop Dead Rock"  with 1970’s pop star Adam Ant, and a starring role in  late 1995 in "Heavy" when she appeared with
Liv Tyler, daughter of Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and Shelley Winters.

As a solo artist she continued to attract huge crowds as a performer doing solo performances and charity benefits. Since 1998 much of her time has been taken up touring and recording with the reformed Blondie and with a final track being added to their new album ‘Blondie’ has now completed their album which was due to be released on Eleven Seven Music on August 7, 2007, in the USA only and in the UK in September, an unusual move considering she is more popular in the UK than in the America.

By the time the album was released Debbie had completed both a solo tour of the US in June and a European tour with Blondie in July.
