Dennis Rodman started his professional career with the Detroit Pistons in 1986. During his time with them, he twice won the NBA Defensive Player Of The Year award in 1990 and 1991. The Pistons gained their first NBA Championship in 1989, winning again in the following year. In addition to Dennis, the star players included Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Bill Laimbeer, and Adrian Dantley.
For some reason only known to him, Dennis Rodman was found in his truck, parked in the Piston’s car park, cradling a loaded shotgun. It was time to move on and he was traded in for Sean Elliot, to the San Antonio Spurs. His place on the team benefited their center, David Robinson, as Dennis freed him up to score, but his stint with them again ended in controversy. Dyeing his hair did not go down well and they parted company after he didn’t show for a crucial game. Once again, he was traded, this time to the Chicago Bulls for Center Will Perdue. This coincided with the legendary Michael Jordan coming out of retirement. Dennis and the Bulls won the Championship.
Dennis Rodman’s status was cemented with the Bulls. He could hold his own with the best of them, and was respected by stars such as Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Horace Grant. He even halted the seven foot one inch frame of O’Neal. His last truly significant season was the 1997-1998, after which he went to the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks for one season apiece. After a long break, he played for the Tijuana Dragons and then moved to the UK to play for the Brighton Bears.
Wrestling is another sport Dennis Rodman got involved in, teaming up with Hulk Hogan. They lost to Lex Luger and The Giant but beat Karl Malone and Diamond Dallas Page. His last match ended in defeat to Randy Savage.
Dennis Rodman has also made the transition from sports star to movie actor, appearing with Jean Claude Van Damme in Double Team, for which he was given three Golden Raspberry awards and in Cutaway with Tom Berenger. He also starred in his very own MTV reality talk show, The Rodman World Tour.
Dennis Rodman did not always fit in with the perceived notion of how a sports star should behave, with his colorful hair, swearing on live television, and various piercing and tattoos. But people are not so easily shocked these days. In any event, he certainly was entertaining. Romance has also played its part in the reputation of Dennis Rodman, with a brief marriage to Carmen Electra and a reported relationship with Madonna.
