Dick Van Dyke 

Dick Van Dyke is an American and television movie actor who is best known for his starring role as Bert in 1964's Mary Poppins and as his role as Dr. Mark Sloan in the the 1990s crime drama television show, Diagnosis Murder. He played Dr. Sloan for all 178 episodes from 1993 to 2001.

His son, Barry Van Dyke, and grandson, Carey Van Dyke, also appeared on one episode of Diagnosis Murder with Dick in 1993.

Another role Van Dyke is well known for is as Robert Petrie in the highly rated and critically acclaimed CBS sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, which ran from 1961 to 1966. Playing loving wife, Laura Petrie, was Mary Tyler Moore. Van Dyke won three Emmy Awards for his five-season role as Rob Petrie, a part that Johnny Carson also auditioned for.

Two of his four children, sons Barry Van Dyke and Christian Van Dyke, from his first marriage to Margie Willet also appeared with Van Dyke in one 1961 episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show. Willet and Van Dyke divorced on May 4, 1984, after almost forty years of marriage.

Born Richard Wayne Van Dyke on December 13, 1925, in West Plains, Missouri , the six foot one actor was inspired as child to go into show business by watching Laurel & Hardy films in movie theaters.

He went to elementary school in Danville, Illinois, before moving with his family to Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1938. Two years later his family moved back to Danville where Van Dyke finished high school.

While in high school he appeared in numerous plays and community theater productions. After graduation he enlisted in the Air Force where he participated in stage shows and worked as a radio DJ.

In 1956 he signed a contract with CBS to host the first network prime-time cartoon show The CBS Theater, which aired for thirteen episodes. He then hosted several game and talk shows including Mother’s Day in 1958 and Laugh Line in 1959, but turned down the position as host to The Price is Right.

Van Dyke made his acting debut as Private Harry Lumpkin in two episodes in the 1957-1958 season of the CBS comedy The Phil Silvers Show. In 1960 he made is Broadway debut starring in the musical Bye Bye Birdie opposite Chita Rivera, for which he won a Tony Award.

He began his film career by reprising his stage role in the film version of Bye Bye Birdie in 1963.

In 1964 Dick starred along side Julie Andrews in the film Mary Poppins, a Walt Disney film about a magic nanny who comes to work for a cold banker's unhappy family. Dick played a cheery chimney sweep with an awful cockney accent.

In 1971 Van Dyke starred with Hope Lange in The New Dick Van Dyke Show where he played Dick Preston, a local talk show host in Phoenix, Arizona. The show lasted three seasons but never reached the popularity of the original.

For a few years Van Dyke’s acting career slowed until his 1989 comeback when he took a guest-starring role on NBC’s hit TV series The Golden Girls. He played Bea Arthur’s (Dorothy’s) lawyer beau who decides to become a circus clown. This part earned him his first Emmy nomination since 1977.

In 1990 he had a very small role as the crooked DA Fletcher in Warren Beatty’s movie Dick Tracy before landing a main role in Diagnosis Murder. In 2003 he appeared as Dr. Townshend is one episode of the television show Scrubs. In 2005 he did the voice of Commisioner Gordon in Batman: New Times and followed that up with the voice-over of Mr. Bloomsberry in 2006’s Curious George.

Released at Christmas in 2006, Van Dyke starred in Night at the Museum, with Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Mickey Rooney, Carla Gugino, Bill Cobbs, Ricky Gervais, and Jake Cherry.
