Hollywood’s A-list spinner, DJ AM was born Adam Goldstein on March 30, 1973, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The "AM" stands for Goldstein’s first and middle name, Adam Michael.
Goldstein began spinning records in his hometown of Philadelphia, before moving to Los Angeles, where he joined the band Crazy Town, originally known as Brimstone Sluggers. When the group first formed, they collaborated with a band called Divine Styler, now known as the Black Eyed Peas. With their unique blend of rock and hip-hop, Crazy Town released albums during the late 90s up until 2003.
Goldstein continued DJing while in Los Angeles, and soon became popular among the young Hollywood crowd for spinning at the hottest night clubs. It was on the scene that Goldstein met young starlet and daughter of Motown legend Lionel Richie, Nicole Richie. The pair were friends before Richie emerged from rehab after battling an addiction to heroin, and they became romantic after her release. Also around this time, Goldstein, who was overweight, underwent gastric bypass surgery.
On September 21, 2004, Goldstein proposed to Richie with a pink sapphire ring. By this time, Richie had become a household name through starring on the hit reality show, The Simple Life, with Paris Hilton. Goldstein occasionally appeared on the show.
Goldstein and his fiancé had a high-profile engagement, in which they were constantly dogged by paparazzi. The media interest was also fueled by Richie’s rapidly shrinking frame, sparking rumors that she suffered from an eating disorder. When the couple called off their engagement in December of 2005, rumors circulated that the constant media attention and Richie’s health issues had been factors in the split.
Goldstein and Richie were reported to be on-again-off-again for most of 2006, often photographed together although they maintained that they had just remained friends. In early 2007, Goldstein was romantically linked to singer and actress, Mandy Moore when they were spotted together that the Sundance Film Festival. By March of 2007, it was reported that Moore and Goldstein had ended their relationship amicably.
Goldstein, who is the owner of popular L.A. nightclub, LAX reportedly commands in the range of $20,000 to $25,000 for a 3-hour DJing set. He currently has a one-year contract with Las Vegas nightclub PURE, inside Caesar's Palace, where he DJs every Friday. He also tours various night clubs across the country.
