Dolly Parton Biography

Blonde, buxom Dolly Rebecca Parton is the most honored female country performer of all time with 25 #1 songs on the country charts, 41 career top 10 country albums, and 110 career charted singles over the past forty years. She has received seven Grammy Awards and a total of forty-two Grammy nominations. She’s also known for her trademark enormous surgically enhanced breasts which some reports say she has insured for $600,000.

Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevierville, Tennessee as the fourth of twelve children. She grew up poor and spent most of her childhood in a dilapidated one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains. She and her husband ended up raising five of her younger brothers and sisters.
On May 30, 1966, Parton married Carl Dean, who ran an asphalt-paving business. Dean rarely goes with Parton to any events and shuns publicity.

Parton began singing when she was a child on local radio programs. At the age of twelve she was regularly appearing on Knoxville, Tennessee, television. By the time she was thirteen she was recording on a small record label and appearing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.

The star graduated from high school in 1964 and permanently moved to Nashville. She signed on with Monument Records in 1965 as a pop star. Her songs weren’t very successful so the album agreed to let her sing country music. In 1967 her first country single, "Dumb Blonde," reached #24 on the charts. Her song, "Something Fishy," released the same year made it to #17.

The same year she joined a weekly syndicated country music television program hosted by Porter Wagoner. She stayed with the Wagoner show and continued to record duets with him for seven years, until she decided to pursue a career as a solo artist. In 1974 her song "I Will Always Love You" was released and went to #1 on the country charts. In 1992 the song was covered by Whitney Houston as the theme song to the film The Bodyguard, in which Whitney starred along with Kevin Costner. Dolly Parton claims to have made over $6 million from the cover version of this song.

In 1977 Parton released a successful pop album that became her first million seller. That same decade she decided to pursue acting as well as recording music. She starred in Jane Fonda’s 1980 film 9 to 5 along with Lily Tomlin. Parton received Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture Actress - Musical/Comedy and New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture - Female.

After twenty years of recording, Parton switched to from RCA to Columbia Records in 1987. She remained with that label until 1995. Since then she’s had contracts with three labels before settling on her current one, Sugar Hills Records.

Parton has used her considerable wealth to create a theme park in Pigeon Ford, Tennessee, called Dollywood, in 1961. In 1988 she opened a dinner restaurant called Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede outside the entrance of the theme park. She also co-owns, with former manager Sandy Gallin, a television production company called Sandollar Productions. Sandollar productions is responsible for producing the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and movies like Father of the Bride I and II.

She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984 and an honorary doctorate from Carson-Newman College in 1990.

During her early singing days Parton did a lot of touring, but limited her concert appearances in the 1990s. Her last big tour was in 2005 where she completed a forty-city tour to promote her album, Those Were the Days.
