Donna Hanover Although a successful woman in her own right as both a television presenter and actress, Donna Honover’s name is, and probably always be synonymous with Rudy Giuliani, Mayor of New York at the time of the terrorist attacks on the city on September 11th 2001. Donna Hanover (nee Kofnovec) was born February 13th 1950 in Oakland, California to a retired United States Navy officer, Lieutenant Commander Robert Kofnovec and his wife Gwendolyn. Her high school education was at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, California and then Stanford University where she graduated in 1972 with a bachelor of Arts in political science. Donna then attended the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and graduated with a masters degree in journalism. In 1972 Donna married Stanley Hanover from whom she was divorced a few years later but continued using the name Hanover. The couple had no children together. Donna spent the next few years working in both Florida and Pennsylvania as a radio and television journalist and it was during her time in Miami that she met Rudy Giuliani and the couple were married in 1984 after Rudy had his first marriage annulled in late 1983. The couple moved to Washington D.C. and then to New York where Donna worked as the lead anchor for the 10 p.m. newscast on WPIX Channel 11 television in New York.
When Rudy ran for Mayor of New York City Donna left the television station to concentrate on the campaign and to allow the couple to have their two children, Andrew and Caroline. During 1993 Donna actively campaigned for Rudy’s mayoral bid. Rudy was successful in his campaign for mayor and Donna became the First Lady of New York City and took up residence in Gracie Mansion, Manhattan. During her time as First Lady she made several television and film appearances such as The People vs Larry Flynt, with Woody Harrelson and Courtney Love, Law and Order with Sam Waterston and Jerry Orbach, The Practice with Dylan McDermott and Marla Sokoloff and in the feature film Ransom with Mel Gibson and Rene Russo. Donna has also had small roles in Sex and The City with Sarah Jessica Parker and in Ally McBeal with Calista Flockhart. In 2000 Donna accepted the lead role in Eve Ensler’s controversial play The Vagina Monologues, which led to many raised eye brows throughout the nation. By 1996 her marriage to Rudy was beginning to show cracks as the couple appeared less and less in public and Donna reverted to using her previous second name, Hanover.
In October 2000 Donna filed for divorce from Giuliani after reports of his affairs with his mayoral aide Cristyne Lategano and later with Judith Nathan. The divorce was a bitter public affair and when the divorce was finalized in July 2002 Donna received a settlement of $6.8 million and custody of both the couple’s children. In 2003 Donna went on to marry an old high school boyfriend, an attorney practicing in California, Edwin Oster. Donna was so inspired at finding her boyfriend of 20 years previous that she wrote a book titled, My Boyfriends Back, in which she tells of her own story and of others who have had a similar experience of losing loves and then meeting them years later. With her ex-husband, Rudy Giuliani, running in the 2008 presidential election it is rumoured that the relationship between their son, Andrew and his father are strained and he has refused to assist in his father’s campaign.
