Donny Osmond A man who has accrued more titles and descriptions during his years in the public eye than his sister, Marie Osmond has dolls! He’s been a author, singer, musician, record producer, actor, race car driver, chat show and game show host, father, sister to the other half of the Donny and Marie duo and brother to the teen idol group The Osmonds. Donny Osmond was born Donald, on December 9th 1957 in Ogden, Utah to parents who were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Olive and George. Donny was born one of nine children of whom only one was a daughter, Marie. Donny musical career began when the father of Andy Williams saw the Osmond Brothers singing at Disneyland and asked Andy to audition the boys for The Andy Williams Show which ran from 1957 to 1971. The group soon became popular regulars on the show and at the age of four Donny made his debut singing ‘You are my Sunshine’. Becoming a teen idol in the 1970’s as a solo act, Donny’s closest competition at that time was another teen idol, David Cassidy, but Donny’s career was to be longer lasting and more stable than Cassidy’s in part due to his talent and to the close religious upbringing from which he has never strayed. Donny is probably best remember for his first two solo hits, ‘Go Away Little Girl in 1971 and ‘Puppy Love’ in 1972, both of which catapulted him to international fame. His first solo television appearance came on the Lucille Ball show when he sang ‘Too Young’ to Lucille’s niece. The mid 1970’s saw Donny pairing up with his younger sister Marie Osmond and together they recorded several albums together and starred on their own television show, The Donny & Marie Show, for which they became famous for their due, I’m a Little Bit Country, I’m a Little Bit Rock ‘n Roll. The show ran from 1976 through 1979.
In 1978 Donny married Debra Glenn and together the couple have five children and in 2005 Donny also became a grandfather. Donny’s next venture was to star in a Broadway production, Little Johnny Jones, which sadly opened and closed on the same night in 1982 amidst dismal reviews. At this time in his life Donny re-grouped and reinvented himself in an attempt to rid himself of the ‘little boy’ image that had been created for him in the preceding decades. He once again returned to Broadway in the 1990’s as the lead in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in which he starred for more than 2,000 shows. Donny’s future career had been established. His next venture ran for two seasons, a talk show with his sister Marie followed by a nomination for the best talk show award before the show was cancelled. Since the new millennium Donny has taken his talents across the Atlantic to the UK where he released his first solo hit since 1973, ‘Breeze On By’ which was co-written by former 1990’s Take That band member, Gary Barlow. Donny and Marie have forged a friendship with Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon Osbourne and together they appeared in a 2006 Pepsi commercial. Donny made the trip back across the Atlantic to New York in 2006 to appear as Gaston in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast. When the show completed it's run on Broadway in 2007, Donny once again returned to the role of Gaston for the grande finale. 2007 has seen Donny as the host of the UK game show Challenge. Donny still lives an exemplary life style based on the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of which he and his family remain members and he has his own web site where he continues sharing his beliefs in an extensive letters-and-comments portion .
