Duran Duran Bio

Duran Duran

With a string of hits on both sides of the Atlantic including, ‘Girls on Film’ ‘Rio’, ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ and the James bond movie theme, ‘A View to a Kill’ the era of the New Romantics saw Duran Duran as one of the leading bands.  Over the past three decades they have maintained a steady fan base and have charted 21 singles over that period.

The original 1981 band line up consisted of John Taylor, Andy Taylor, Roger Taylor, Nick Rhodes and Simon Le Bon. Along with their musical popularity they also became leading fashion icons of the 1980’s when they fell pray to the hair liquored mullet hair style and frilly shirt look. In an effort to present fashion as part of their image they worked with designer, Vivienne Westwood in the late 1990’s and with Giorgio Armani in the early 2000’s.

Other bands of the time vying for the top position were the outrageous Adam Ant and Spandau Ballet which only made Duran Duran more outrageous in their video presentations in order to gain the most recognition such as releasing their raunchy video that accompanied their ‘Girls on Film’ hit single. However, the video was banned by the BBC because of its explicit shots of topless women and mud wrestling fetishes.

During the 1980’s the band gained approval from non less than Princess Diana when she revealed in an interview that they were her favourite group and the band were dubbed, ’The Fab Five’ by the British press, a play on the title held by The Beatles in the 19760’s, the ‘Fab Four’. Moving on through the 1980’s the new Romantic era subsided a little and Duran Duran’s new rivals were Boy George’s ‘Culture Club’ and George Michael and Andrew Ridgley’s ‘Wham’.

When Bob Geldof and Midge Ure put together their charity benefit Band Aid single, ‘Do They Know its Christmas?’, they included the boys of Duran Duran in the line up along with Paul Young, Sting, Phil Collins and girl band, Bananarama. In 1985 the band recorded the James Bond movie theme to ‘View to a Kill’ which starred Roger Moore as Bond. It was the only Duran Duran single to reach number one in the USA. At the end of 1985 Simon Le Bon married model Yasmin Parvenah.

By 1986 the group had dwindle to just a trio with Roger Taylor and Andy Taylor leaving the band amidst legal battles and rumours of exhaustion. The trio of Simon, Nick and John struggled to survive lacking a guitarist and a drummer and frequent changes of management and periods of self management.

In 2001 the ‘Fab Five’ reformed and played to sold out concerts in their 25th anniversary tour in 2003. At the MTV Awards in 2003 the band received the accolade of the Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2004 they had the honour of receiving the Outstanding Contribution award at the BRIT Awards.

2006 saw the band recording their version of John Lennon’s ‘Instant Karma’ for the Amnesty International campaign and to commemorate the 25th year of Lennon’s murder. With the 2006 announcement that Andy Taylor was once again leaving the ban they had to give up months of studio work and began focusing on new material with just the line up of four band members and the input of producer Timbaland.

As favourites of the late Princess Diana it was only fitting that her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, should request the attendance of Duran Duran at the Concert for Diana which they  organized in July 2007 to commemorate ten years since their mother’s death. Duran Duran's next album ‘Red Carpet Massacre’ is due for release in November 2007 in both the USA and UK. The single to be released from the album was produced by Justin Timberlake.

Although Duran Duran were initially regarded as a teeny bopper boy band in the early 1980’s, they have turned that image around several times over the past three decades and have been cited as the musical influence in the careers of celebrities of the new millennium such as , Gwen Stefani, Savage Garden, Justin Timberlake, Outkast and Coldplay.
