Dustin Hoffman Bio

Dustin HoffmanTwo-time Oscar-winning American actor Dustin Hoffman has a reputation for being hard to work with, but is also famous for his ability to take on difficult acting roles and do an excellent job with them. One such example is an autistic man in 1988's Rain Man, alongside Tom Cruise.
Born on August 8, 1937, in Los Angeles, California, to Jewish American parents, Hoffman got into acting by accident. After high school he went to the Los Angeles Conservatory of music with dreams of becoming a concert pianist. He put that dream aside to study at Santa Monica College. But his grades were poor and it’s been said that he took an acting class in an effort to raise his grade point average.
Hoffman decided that acting was for him and went on to perform at the Pasadena Playhouse for two years beside fellow actor, Gene Hackman. He then decided to relocate to New York City with Hackman and another struggling young actor, Robert Duvall. When Hoffman reached New York, he worked a series of odd jobs and the occasional small television role.
In 1960 Hoffman landed a role in the off-Broadway production, Yes Is for a Very Young Man. The following year he had a walk-on role in the Broadway production, A Cook for Mr. General. Shortly after that Hoffman decided to get formal acting training with Lee Strasberg at the Actors’ Studio where he became a dedicated Method actor.
By the time 1966 rolled around, Hoffman had one himself a Best Actor Obie Award for his theatrical work in The Journey of the Fifth Horse.
In 1967 Hoffman landed the role of a sweaty-palmed, sexually uncomfortable virgin in The Graduate. Up-and-coming director Mike Nichols had planned to give the part to a couple of other actors first, including Robert Redford. But Nichols thought Redford was too charming for the role and that the diminutive, wiry, and unassuming Hoffman was better suited for the part. Hoffman received an Academy Award nomination for his role in The Graduate, and soon the movie roles came pouring in for Hoffman. In the movie, he plays a recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock who is trapped into an affair with Mrs. Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft.
He appeared in Midnight Cowboy in 1969 starring newcomer Jon Voight, for which he received his second Academy Award nomination; The Little Big Man in 1970; the physically and sexually violent Straw Dogs in 1971; Lenny in 1974, a movie that earned Hoffman another Academy Award nomination; Agatha in 1979, where Hoffman demanded that the script be adjusted; and Kramer vs Kramer also in 1979 also starring Meryl Streep, which earned Hoffman his first Academy Award.
The 1980s were just as successful for Hoffman. A few of the more well known 80s movies he starred in include Tootsie in 1982 and Rain Man in 1988, with Tom Cruise, which earned Hoffman his second Academy Award.
During the 1990s Hoffman did many large studio films including Hook with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts, in 1991, Outbreak in 1995 with Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding Jr and Donald Sutherland, and the poorly received The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc in 1999 with Milla Jovovich, and Faye Dunaway .
The most recent movie that Hoffman played a major role in was the 2004 comedy film, Meet the Fockers with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro. He had a cameo role in The Lost City in 2005 with Andy Garcia and Bill Murray, and appeared in a German-language film in 2006.
Hoffman has been married twice. He has two children, Karina and Jenna, from his first marriage to Anne Byrne Hoffman. The two divorced on October 6, 1980. Only days later on October 21, 1980, Hoffman married his second wife, attorney Lisa Gottesegen. The two are still married and have four children together, Jacob, Max, Rebecca, and Alexandra.YUDDY |
