Elisabeth ShueMost of the early films Academy Award nominated, American actress Elisabeth Shue starred in, portrayed her as the typical, wholesome girl next door. This is especially true for one of her better known roles as Ali Mills in 1984’s The Karate Kid. But the following year she broke out of her typecast role when she played the prostitute Sera in Mike Figgis's Leaving Las Vegas.
Shue was born on October 6, 1963, in Wilmington, Delaware, to a bank executive mother and a real estate developer father. She was the middle child until her older brother, Will, died from a freak accident in 1988 at age twenty-six. She also has a younger brother, Andrew.
During her teen years she lived on the wild side, attending major parties, smoking drugs, and drinking alcohol.
While in high school she filmed her first commercial for a Florida theme park. When she graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey , she went on to study at the all-girl school Wellesely College.
Shue continued to appear in commercials and by the time she transferred to Harvard University (becoming the fourth generation of her family to study there), she had already appeared in fifty commercials. One of her better known appearances was for a Burger King commercial where she became known as The Burger King Girl.
One semester short of graduating from Harvard with a degree in political science, Shue dropped out to focus on her acting. She soon landed roles in Adventures in Babysitting; Cocktail, co-starring Tom Cruise; Back to the Future 2 and 3, with Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and Crispin Glover; Soapdish, with Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert Downey Jr., and Teri Hatcher; and The Marrying Man, with Kim Basinger, Alec Baldwin, and Paul Reiser.
Trying to shed her girl-next-door image Shue co-starred in the movie Leaving Las Vegas with Nicolas Cage. Her portrayal of the prostitute Sera earned her an Oscar and Golden Globe nominee for Best Actress, and also made her the recipient for an Independent Spirit Award, a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award, and a National Society of Film Critics Award.
After Leaving Las Vegas, Shue appeared in five more films: The Saint, with Val Kilmer; Deconstructing Harry, with Woody Allen, Kirstie Alley, Demi Moore, and Billy Crystal; Palmetto, with Woody Harrelson and Michael Rapaport; Cousin Bette, with Jessica Lange; Molly, with Aaron Eckhart; and The Hollow Man, with Kevin Bacon and Josh Brolin.
After her filming of The Hollow Man in 2000 Shue didn’t appear in any other movies until 2004’s drama, Mysterious Skin. In 2005 she appeared in two other films: the thriller Hide and Seek, starring Robert De Niro and child-star Dakota Fanning, and the biographical drama Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story, also co-starred Dakota Fanning. The movie, due to be out in 2007, is about a teenage girl with an interest in soccer; the story is loosely based on Elisabeth Shue’s personal experiences.
Shue is still married to director Davis Guggenheim, whom she wed in 1994. On November 11, 1997, the couple had their first child, a son named Miles William. The same year, Shue returned to Harvard to finish her degree. On March 19, 2001, she gave birth to another child, daughter Stella Street. Her second daughter Agnes Charles was born on June 18, 2006.
