Elizabeth PerkinsEmmy nominated actress Elizabeth Perkins was born November 18, 1960, in Queens, New York, to parents James Perkins and Jo Williams. Of Greek ancestry, her grandparents actually Americanized their last name from Pisperikos to Perkins upon entry to the United States. Raised in Vermont, Perkins's parents divorced when she was only three.
Always aware that acting would be in her future, Perkins completed high school and spent the next three years studying at the renowned Goodman School of Drama in Chicago. Loyal to these roots, she has always considered theater to be an integral part of her acting career.
Perkins made her film debut in 1986 with About Last Night... a romantic comedy co-starring Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, and James Belushi.
But it was truly 1988 that proved to be her breakout year. Receiving a lead role opposite Tom Hanks in Penny Marshall's Big, Perkins caught the attentions and hearts of American audiences and never let it go.
She continued winning roles, and garnered much critical acclaim with her portrayal in 1990’s Avalon. With this film, she truly established herself as an acting force alongside other seasoned thespians Kevin Pollak, Aidan Quinn, and Elijah Wood.
The following year, opposite William Hurt, Perkins earned even more acclaim in The Doctor when she portrayed a terminal cancer patient.
But despite all the accolades and recognition, many still remember her for the 1994 portrayal of Wilma Flintstone in The Flintstones. Featuring a host of celebrities, her costars included John Goodman, Rosie O'Donnell, Rick Moranis, Kyle MacLachlan, Halle Berry, and Elizabeth Taylor.
Others may recognize her for a prominent role in The Ring Two with Naomi Watts, or for her recurring character on the Showtime television series Weeds. Playing off seasoned actress Mary Louise Parker, Perkins earned an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Satellite nomination for her portrayal of upright PTA mother Celia Hodes.
But Perkins isn’t only intimate with other Hollywood players in front of the camera. In real life, Perkins and Oscar-nominated actress Diane Lane are best friends. They even appeared together in 2005 for the Diane Lane and John Cusack romantic comedy Must Love Dogs. The film also included fan favorites Christopher Plummer, Dermot Mulroney, and Stockard Channing. In her personal life, Perkins was married to fellow actor Terry Kinney in 1984. The couple eventually divorced, but they had one child together. Perkins remarried in 2000 to cinematographer Julio Macat, and the two are still currently together. YUDDY |
