Emeril Lagasse Bio

Emeril Lagasse

Emeril Lagasse is a celebrity chef known for his television show Emeril Live and for his several books.

Emeril John Lagasse was born on October 15, 1959, in Fall River, Massachusetts. He has an older sister, Delores, and a younger brother, Mark. As a child ,he was taught to cook by his Portuguese mother Hilda, and he went on to work in a Portuguese bakery, learning the art of making bread and pastry. He was also a keen drummer, and upon graduating high school was offered a full scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music, but opted instead to study culinary arts at Johnson and Wales University, an institution which was later to award him an honorary doctorate. He then traveled to Paris and Lyons to take apprenticeships in restaurants and gain more direct experience in his chosen profession.

Upon returning to America, Lagasse worked in restaurants in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City before being persuaded to take up residence in Commander's Palace in New Orleans, where he would remain for nearly eight years. It was there that his unique culinary style, notably heavy on garlic and with a fondness for Cajun and Creole dishes, gained renown. On the strength of the reputation he built up at the Palace he was able to set up his own restaurant, Emeril's, in New Orleans; Esquire magazine promptly pronounced it Restaurant of the Year. The Food Network took an interest and three years later Lagasse had his own show, starting with the basics in How to Boil Water.

It was here that his eccentric personality got the chance to display itself; his fierce enthusiasm and catchphrase "Bam!" made him a favorite with viewers. He went on to present Essence of Emeril (a reference to his preferred spice blends) and Emeril Live, as well as becoming a talk show favourite with the likes of Conan O Brien, Rosie O'Donnell, Tony Danza, Ellen DeGeneres, and Jay Leno. Such was his enthusiasm for television that he even enjoyed a brief career as an actor, appearing on Cosby and contributing his vocal talents to an episode of the animated Hercules which also starred Lisa Kudrow, Linda Hamilton, and Michael Dorn. An attempt was made to launch a sitcom in which he would play a character based on himself, but this proved less successful.

Lagasse's achievements as a celebrity did not distract him from his focus on the restaurant industry. Throughout the 1990s he concentrated on expanding his business; he now owns nine award-winning restaurants, three of them in New Orleans, where he lives. He also has his own product range, sold via his website, and has designed kitchen knives for Wüsthof and cookware for All-Clad.

Lagasse continues to work on television as food correspondent for Good Morning America. He has also gained fame with his ten books, which have sold over four million copies in total.

Dedicated to the city where he has found so much inspiration, Lagasse was a front line spokesperson for New Orleans during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He also heads the Emeril Lagasse Foundation which runs projects in the areas around his restaurants, aiming to provide support and mentoring for poor children with outstanding creative ability.

Lagasse has been married three times and has a total of four children. He lives with his wife Alden Lovelace and their two children, Meril and E.J.
