Emma Samms Bio

Emma Samms

One of several British imports to star in the much loved and successful evening soap opera, ‘Dynasty’ along with Joan Collins and Catherine Oxenberg, Emma Samms made the transition from the UK to the USA in the 1970’s.

Emma Samms was born Emma Samuelson in London, England on August 28th 1960 into a happy and affluent family. At age six, she showed an interest in dance and began studying at the prestigious Royal Ballet School in London.  Emma had a charmed childhood and youth until it was marred with the death of her younger brother, James, from a rare blood disease. Emma’s way of escaping the hurt was to focus on dance. But at the age of sixteen an injury she sustained ended her ballet career.

Samms then turned her attention to modeling and later she took up acting. At this time she changed her name from Samuelson to plain Samms as the Equity union already had an Emma Samuelson registered as an actress.  Emma’s first role, in 1979, came in the movie "Arabian Adventure," and saw her acting alongside many American greats such as Mickey Rooney, Christopher Lee and John Ratzenberger. This first role garnered her the British Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer of 1979.

In 1982, as the devious Holly Sutton, Samms joined the cast of "General Hospital" which had seen the start of many promising acting careers including Demi Moore, Mark Hamill, Nikki Cox and future singing sensation Ricky Martin

Four years later, at age 24, Samms attained international fame when she landed the role of the spoiled, foot stamping Fallon Carrington on the prime-time soap "Dynasty." The role had been occupied by Pamela Sue Martin until 1985 when she quit the show to move onto new pastures, leaving a gap in the cast which was amply filled with the charismatic Miss Samms.

In 1981, Samms landed a part opposite Mark Harmon in the movie "Goliath Awaits’ which also starred Christopher Lee and John Carridine. Emma was introduced to viewers in several episodes of ‘Dynasty’ in the 1980’s and later become one of the main stars of the spin-off series ‘The Colbys’ with John James, Charelton Heston and another British actress, Stephanie Beecham. The Colbys’ was axed after just two seasons and at that time Samms returned to the cast of ‘Dynasty’.

As the indulgent '80s ended, so did the decadent "Dynasty.’ In 1995, Emma landed the role of villainous Grayson Louder in the prime time soap, ‘Models Inc.’ along side future model, Garcelle Beauvais Nilon and ‘Dallas’ star Linda Gray. Emma twice turned down the offer to be one of Hugh Hefner’s Playboy centerfold models during her stint on ‘Dynasty.’

Although Emma was enjoying a successful acting career on both sides of the Atlantic, her off screen life was tainted by three failed marriages. Samms was first engaged to Marvin Hamlisch in the early 1980s, and in 1991 she went on to marry Bansi Nagji, CEO of Monitor Innovation and a senior partner of Monitor Group.

But the marriage failed after just one year. By 1994 Emma was ready to try marriage again, this time marrying Tim Dillon but once again the marriage failed after just one year. John Holloway was to be Emma’s third husband in 1996 and this marriage survived until 2003. The couple were together long enough to have two children, Cameron, born 1997 and a daughter Beatrice born 1998.

In 2003 Emma returned to the UK where she appeared in four episodes of the BBC hospital series ‘Holby City’ and in 2005 she landed a role in  the BBC daytime series ‘Doctors.’A return to the United States saw Emma reviving her character, Holly, on General Hospital for seven episodes in February 2006. Her character was once again so well received that she returned again in May 2006 for a three week stint in the day time soap opera. While in the USA Samms appeared as a presenter at the 2006 Daytime Emmy Awards in Hollywood in April 2006.

It was announced in early 2007 that Emma would appear as a guest on an episode of the British ITV police series ‘The Bill’ that aired in September 2007.Emma is now based in England where she is raising her two children and she continues to perform in made-for-TV movies and has written and sold several screenplays.
