As early as seven years old, Rossum’s vocal talents were noticed and utilized. Auditioning for the Metropolitan Opera, she was accepted into their Children’s Chorus. She remained there for five years, singing with prestigious opera figures such as Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. Performing in a wide range of productions, Rossum even earned the opportunity to be directed under Franco Zeffirelli in his stage version of Carmen.
She pursued her education at Spence School, but her increasingly demanding singing obligations forced her to graduate through online extension courses. More recently, she also pursued online extension courses through Columbia Unversity.
Although she loved singing, her interests began to shift to acting by age twelve. She secured an agent, and she quickly made her onscreen debut in 1997 in an episode of Law & Order with Jerry Orbach and Benjamin Bratt. Capitalizing on that success, she took a supporting role in Clint Eastwood’s Oscar-winning project Mystic River with Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laura Linney.
She then increased her visibility exponentially with her appearance opposite Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal in the action drama The Day After Tomorrow in 2004. Proving a big year for the young actress, 2004 also brought her the lead in the Joel Schumacher directed film version of The Phantom of the Opera. Her costars included Gerard Butler, Patrick Wilson, Miranda Richardson, and Minnie Driver. Rossum’s most recent role came in 2006 with the critical flop Poseidon. The film also starred Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, and Richard Dreyfuss. She is currently filming Dragonball, which is due for a 2008 release. Outside of acting, her debut album, Inside Out, was released on October 23, 2007. In her personal life, she splits her time between Manhattan and Los Angeles.
