Eric Close Biography
American actor Eric Close made his first mark on the acting world with various performances onstage. He followed with notable turns in television series such as Dark Skies, The Magnificent Seven, and others. He is best known, however, for his long-standing role on the popular drama series Without a Trace.
Eric Randolph Close was born May 24, 1967 in Staten Island, New York. Close came from a relatively large family and was the oldest of three children. Moving to accommodate his father’s job as an orthopedic surgeon, Close lived in Indiana, Michigan, and San Diego before he was seven years old.
Finally settling in the California town, Close pursued his education from the University of Southern California. Graduating in 1989, he obtained his undergraduate degree in communications.
While he didn’t choose to study acting, Close always had an affinity for the stage. Making his onstage debut in Rat Songs, he transitioned to the screen shortly after.
To that end, he made his onscreen debut in 1991 with a very small part in Keeping Secrets opposite Suzanne Somers.
The following year, he landed a recurring role on Santa Barbara. He was with the show from 1992 to 1993 as Sawyer Walker.
He found his next recurring role in 1995 as William “Billy” Griffin on the popular drama Sisters. He appeared until 1996 opposite Swoosie Kurtz, Patricia Kalember, Sheila Kelley, and Sela Ward.
Transitioning to science fiction, 1996 brought a starring role in Dark Skies. He appeared for the show’s one season opposite Megan Ward, Charley Lang, and Michael J Henderson.
Constantly staying busy, 1998 to 2000 found Close as Vin Tanner in The Magnificent Seven, while 1999 to 2000 marked Close’s starring role in Now and Again opposite Dennis Haysbert.
Earning the opportunity to work with some of Hollywood’s most influential figures, Close had a four-episode stint on Taken from executive producer Steven Spielberg. Constituting his return to the sci-fi genre, the series starred Dakota Fanning, Heather Donahue, and others.
Despite his considerable exposure, it still took a starring role on the crime series Without a Trace to make Close a household name. Landing the role of Martin Fitzgerald, he joined the cast in 2002. He joined Anthony LaPaglia, Poppy Montgomery, Enrique Murciano, and Marianne Jean Baptiste.
Close has remained a staple on the show for all of its seven seasons.
In his personal life, Close married Keri Close in 1995. They have two children and are currently still together.
