Eric Dane Bio

Eric Dane

Actor Eric Dane was born on November 9, 1972, in San Francisco, California. In high school, Eric enjoyed athletics and acting in school plays. After playing the character of Joe Keller in Arthur Miller's All My Sons, Eric realized that acting was his calling.

After moving to Los Angeles to pursue his career, Eric made his small-screen debut at age twenty-one in 1988 with the popular coming-of-age series The Wonder Years, starring with Fred Savage. He continued to land bit parts in various television shows, including Married with Children in 1987, with Ed O'Neill and Christina Applegate; Silk Stalkings in 1991; and Roseanne in 1988, with Rosanne Barr and John Goodman. Eric also had a recurring guest role playing Phoebe Halliwell's year-long boyfriend Jason Dean in the bewitching series Charmed in 1998.

One recurring theme throughout Eric’s career has been "playing doctor" – in Gideon's Crossing in 2000 he played the role of Dr. Cooper. Then in 2006, he landed the role for which he is currently best known, playing plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan, also known as McSteamy, on the hit primetime show Grey's Anatomy. Eric’s character was behind the breakup of a married couple on the show, and his appearances have been met with positive audience response, resulting in Eric securing a contract for the show's third season.

In 1999, Eric scored his first major feature film appearance in The Basket, the tale of a small town near Spokane, Washington during World War I. In 2005, he appeared in the horror film Feast, which was executive produced by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Wes Craven, and Chris Moore. Eric has also appeared in several made-for-TV films, including Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story, starring Glenn Close; as well as the 2004 remake of the Manson family biopic, Helter Skelter, in which he played a member of the murderous Manson clan.

In 2006, Eric landed his first leading film role in the German-made movie Open Water 2 , also known as Adrift. The film is a dark tale of old high school friends who decide to go for an innocent cruise on a party boat, and find themselves in peril when the last person who jumps in the water forgets to let down the ladder.

On October 29, 2004, Eric married actress Rebecca Gayheart in Las Vegas. The actress had been previously engaged to Brett Ratner, who directed 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, in which Eric played Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man. Eric has previously dated actress Lara Flynn Boyle in 2001, when the pair met on the set of TV-series Gideon's Crossing. The actress reportedly sported the name "Eric" tattooed on her body, even though the relationship turned out to be short-lived.

Unlike many celebrities who vehemently defend their private life, Eric has expressed an acceptance to the ramifications of life in the spotlight, stating: "The person I am is who I am. My life is my career, my career is my life. Even my private life – if it and my career bleed together so be it."
