Eric Idle Bio

Eric Idle

Eric Idle is a comedian, actor, director, producer, author, and songwriter best known as one of the stars of Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Eric Idle was born on March 29, 1943, in Durham, England, growing up in nearby South Shields . His father had recently returned from his Second World War service in the Royal Air Force only to be killed in a traffic accident on Christmas Eve, and his mother struggled to raise him alone, sending him to the Royal Wolverhampton School as a boarder when he was just seven years old. There he navigated difficult social situations by honing his quick wits and humor, and he played truant every Thursday to visit a nearby cinema. Academically he prospered, and he went on to win a place in Pembroke College in Cambridge.

At university, Idle quickly befriended Tim Brooke-Taylor and Bill Oddie, who invited him to join the Footlights comedy club. A year later he became its president and opened it up to women, with the writer Germaine Greer being one of the first to take advantage of the change. It also led to him meeting John Cleese and Graham Chapman. He met other Monty Python members Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam, and Michael Palin when he worked alongside them on children's TV show Do Not Adjust Your Set after graduation.

Other early television work included We Have Ways of Making You Laugh with Frank Muir and Gina Warwick, and Idle worked as a writer for several comedy programs. But it was Monty Python's Flying Circus that really made him a star. The massively successful series launched four films and led to its team working together on a variety of other projects. Idle's particular talent showed in his solo writing of the longer sketches and in his creation of a host of enduringly popular songs. He went on to star in numerous other TV shows and films, disguising himself to hide from the mob in Nuns on the Run, with Robbie Coltrane; fighting for his right to the throne in Splitting Heirs, with Rick Moranis and Catherine Zeta Jones; and governing a trashed planet as Wreck-Gar in Transformers: The Movie, with Leonard Nimoy and Orson Welles. His writing work on the sketch show Rutland Weekend Television, with Neil Innes, led to them creating The Rutles, a parody of The Beatles. Idle's "documentary" film about the band, The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash, featured such comedy favorites as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and John Belushi. George Harrison, a long time friend of Idle's, also put in an appearance.

Besides film and television work, Idle has been involved with the world of video games, playing the wizard Rincewind in adaptations of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. He has also written several books of his own, including two novels, Hello, Sailor and The Road to Mars. He has written extensively for the theater and has acted on Broadway as well as performing in The Mikado with the English National Opera. More recently he has adapted the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail (which, along with the usual cast, featured a cameo from author Iain Banks) into the stage musical Spamalot, which is contracted to run for at least another ten years.

Idle has been married twice. He has a son, Casey, by his first wife, actress Lyn Ashley, and a daughter, Lily, by his current wife Tania Kosevich. Idle has had an asteroid and the GUI for the Python programming language named in his honor.
