Eric StoltzInformally considered the "king of independent film," Eric Stoltz was born September 30, 1961, in Whittier, California . Stoltz’s parents were both teachers, and he was raised in the Los Angeles area. By fourteen years of age, Stoltz was earning money by playing piano and through one of his gigs, he met and befriended future ER star Anthony Edwards. The two eventually became roommates at the University of Southern California, USA. Stoltz, however, dropped out in his junior year.
Pursuing both film and theater, by 1982 Stoltz landed a role in the now cult classic Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The film was a hotbed of pre-stardom actors, including Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, and Forest Whitaker.
His next major role came in 1985 with Mask, where he acted alongside Cher and Laura Dern. Playing a boy suffering from massive facial disfiguration, Stoltz garnered massive critical acclaim and even earned a Golden Globe nomination.
In 1987, he found commercial success with the romantic comedy Some Kind of Wonderful. He acted beside future stars Mary Stuart Masterson and Lea Thompson.
Staying in the 80s romantic comedy vein, Stoltz next appeared in 1989’s Say Anything… with John Cusack, Ione Skye, John Mahoney, and Lili Taylor.
Winning even more critical acclaim, Stoltz teamed up with Helen Hunt and Wesley Snipes for the tearjerker The Waterdance in 1992. Stoltz and Hunt would eventually work together again on the hugely successful television series Mad About You; Stoltz playing Hunt’s ex-boyfriend.
Staying true to his independent roots, Stoltz took a role in 1993 for the new film Bodies, Rest & Motion. His costars included Phoebe Cates, Bridget Fonda, Tim Roth, and Alicia Witt.
But it was 1994 that produced what was arguably the biggest splash in his career. Taking a small role in the independent film Pulp Fiction, Stoltz worked under the then little known director Quentin Tarantino. The scene in which Stoltz delivers a shot of adrenaline into an overdosing Uma Thurman’s heart became an instant classic. John Travolta also starred in this intense and graphic scene. 1994 also garnered Stoltz another memorable role, this time for the lead in Killing Zoe.
Slightly more recently, Stoltz has appeared on the sitcom Will and Grace with Debra Messing and on the drama Once and Again. In the world of film he can be seen in the film The Butterfly Effect with Ashton Kutcher.
In 2002, Stoltz received critical acclaim for his directing of My Horrible Year, earning him a daytime Emmy nomination. Stoltz’s work on the stage also earned him a Tony nomination for Our Town.
In his early acting days, Stoltz lived with Jennifer Jason Leigh for four years, from 1985 to 1989, and later with Bridget Fonda for eight years, from 1990-1998. He currently lives in New Mexico. YUDDY |
