Faith Evans Bio

Faith Evans

Faith Evans is a Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter who has also found fame as an actress. Besides her own achievements, she is known as the widow of The Notorious B I G.

Faith Renée Evans was born on June 10, 1973, in Lakeland, Florida. Her father, a musician, walked out when she was just a baby, and her teenage mother, Helene, took her to Newark, New Jersey, where her grandparents and aunt, Johnnie Mae, helped to raise her. Always passionate about performing, she began singing in the local church choir when she was just two years old, going on to perform in several school musicals. After graduating from high school as an honor student, she took up a scholarship at Fordham University studying marketing, but dropped out after just one year to pursue a career in music.

Evans started out in the professional music industry as a writer, penning works for the likes of Mary J Blige and Usher, before her talent as a vocalist was noted by producer Sean Diddy Combs. He introduced her to Al B Sure, for whom she worked as a session singer, assisted by her then lover Kiyamma Griffin. After the birth of her daughter, Chyna, she split from Griffin and became the first woman to sign to Combs's Bad Boy Records label. Her début album, Faith, was a smash hit, eventually achieving platinum status. Bolstered by the singles "You Used to Love Me" and "Soon as I get Home," it served to announce her as an up-and-coming star.

Evans's star status, however, was soon overshadowed by her marriage to hip hop icon, The Notorious B I G, also known as Biggie. The couple enjoyed a whirlwind romance, tying the knot just days after they met, but found themselves on rocky ground after the escalation of Biggie's feud with fellow rapper Tupac Shakur. Evans was particularly offended by Shakur's claims that he had slept with her, made while she was pregnant with her son Christopher Jordan. Meanwhile, rumors were rife that Biggie was having affairs with Lil Kim and Charlie Baltimore. Unable to take the pressure, the couple separated, and just a few weeks later Biggie was gunned down on his way home from a party. His assailant was never identified. Devastated by his death, Evans paid tribute with the song "I'll Be Missing You." She fell into a deep depression and it was some months before she felt able to work again.

In 1998 Evans married her manager Todd Russaw and had a third child, Joshua. She re-launched her music career with the optimistic album Keep the Faith, which included the number one song "Never Gonna let You Go" by Babyface. She went on to work with Whitney Houston, Kelly Price, DMX, and Eric Benet, and to record three more successful solo albums. Later she would collaborate with Lil Mo, Fantasia, Carl Thomas, and Robin Thicke.

Having established herself as a successful recording artist, Evans made a move into acting, appearing alongside Pras and Ja Rule in Robert Adetuyi's Turn It Up and singing gospel in Jonathan Lynn's The Fighting Temptations. She and Russaw launched the production company Pedigree MGI, enabling her to take advantage of the business skills she had acquired in college. In her spare time she works as a mentor with inner city youth groups.
