Frances Tomelty

Frances Tomelty is an actress who’s worked in television, radio, movies, and on stage. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, her father, Joe Tomelty, was an actor. Her early career involved many episodes of British soap operas, drama series, and television plays.

A movie career followed with parts in British films to begin with. Frances Tomelty appeared in the 1982 TV movie Blue Money. The crime caper, directed by Colin Bucksey, starred Tim Curry and Scottish comedian Billy Connolly. In 1986, Frances appeared in Lamb, a drama directed by Colin Gregg and starring Liam Neeson, Harry Towb, and Hugh O’Conor. Frances was also seen in the U.S. made-for-television movie, A State of Emergency. Directed by Richard C.Bennett, it starred Martin Sheen, Peter Firth, and Bobby Sherman.

Television appearances and movie roles continued for Frances Tomelty. She was becoming international with a German made movie production directed by Pia Frankenberg, who also took a lead role. Called Brennende Betten, it is a romantic comedy and also starred Jennifer Susan Hibbert and the late British punk singer Ian Dury. Frances supplied her voice for an episode of the popular British TV series, Shakespeare: The Animated Tales. She also voiced Calphurnia in Julius Caesar, with Joss Ackland as the voice of Caesar and Jim Carter as the voice of Mark Antony. Frances then appeared in the U.S. made-for-television movie called Nobody’s Children, a moving drama directed by David Wheatley and starring Ann-Margret.

Director Tom Waller cast Frances Tomelty in another British movie called Monk Dawson; the story of a disgraced Catholic priest stars John Michie, Benedict Taylor, and ex-Spandau Ballet member Martin Kemp. Frances has appeared in an episode of the secret intelligence drama MI-5, known as Spooks in the UK. The popular series stars Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes, and Jenny Agutter.

Frances Tomelty is also well known for her marriage to rock star Sting. Married from 1976 to 1984, it was difficult for Sting to sustain a family life and his commitments to the Police. The band, which also included members Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers, was in demand all around the world. The couple had a son and a daughter together, and daughter Fuschia Sumner has become an actress herself. Fuschia looks set to have a very successful career of her own, following in the footsteps of her celebrity parents.
