She made her first big splash with a leading role in St. Trinians, and she is set to make an even bigger impression with her upcoming role in Quantum of Solace.
Gemma Arterton was born January of 1986 in Gravesend, Kent, England. She was raised by both her mother and her father, a cleaner and welder respectively. She has one sister, Hannah, who is younger than her. Arterton obtained her education from a local Gravesend grammar school, after which she attended a performance art program. Showing a tremendous amount of aptitude and talent, she received a full grant to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. While finishing her training at the prestigious academy, Arterton landed her first onscreen role. It was in 2007 opposite Maggie Smith and David Walliams in Capturing Mary. Her stage debut came in the same year with a version of William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost. Arterton was able to portray Rosaline at the historic Globe Theatre in London.
Shortly after, Arterton auditioned for the much sought after role of Kelly in the comedy St. Trinian’s. Beating out the likes of Sienna Miller and other Hollywood names, Arterton costarred with Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, and Mischa Barton. For her efforts, Arterton earned an Empire Award nomination in 2008 for Best Newcomer. Proving to be an increasingly desirable actress around Hollywood, Arterton has five projects in varying stages of completion. She completed work on the comedy Three and Out as well as the Guy Ritchie action flick RocknRolla. She is set to star opposite Gerard Butler, Thandie Newton, Jeremy Piven, and Tom Wilkinson in the latter project. Keeping extremely busy, Arterton is currently filming two projects. The first project is Tess of the D’Urbervilles where she is playing the title character. The second project looks to truly launch her career, as she landed the highly coveted role of Agent Fields in the latest installment in the James Bond series, Quantum of Solace. Directed by Marc Forster, she is set to appear beside Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, and Judi Dench.
