Born in 1961, George Clooney was raised in Kentucky. After college, he eventually got work in minor roles on TV, getting a big break when he was cast in a recurring role on the sitcom Roseanne, playing the boss of Roseanne Barr. The series that catapulted him into stardom, however, was ER in which he played Dr. Ross for five years. Anthony Edwards, Laura Innes, and Julianna Margulies played three of his colleagues.
George Clooney, with his handsome features and charming manner, was destined for a movie career, which he duly achieved after leaving ER. He’s played a variety of roles, including landing the coveted part of Batman in Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin, co-starring Chris O Donnell and Uma Thurman. However, the film was panned and he didn’t play Batman again. A series of hits were to follow, as in 2000, in the Joel Coen directed film, O, Brother, Where Art Thou?, starring John Turturro, John Goodman, and Holly Hunter. In the same year, The Perfect Storm was released, an adventure directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Mark Wahlberg and Diane Lane.
In 2001, George Clooney starred in the crime caper Ocean’s Eleven. A re-make of the original movie featuring the Rat Pack, (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, and Peter Lawford), it was directed by Steven Soderbergh and starred Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and Casey Affleck. The sequel followed three years later and also starred Catherine Zeta Jones, Don Cheadle, and Bernie Mac. The third move, Ocean's Thirteen, is due out in 2007 and also stars Ellen Barkin and Al Pacino.
George Clooney has never relied on his matinee idol image, and has been determined to do interesting work. 2005 was an excellent year for him regarding two movies he was involved in. In keeping with his interest in politics, (he is a keen supporter of the Democrats), he directed and acted in Good Night, and Good Luck. The backdrop to the movie is the Communist witch hunts of the 1950s led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, and starred Jeff Daniels and David Strathairn. George co-wrote the screenplay with his friend, the actor Grant Heslov. His other success of that year was Syriana, a political thriller directed by Stephen Gaghan, in which he starred with Kayvan Novak and Christopher Plummer. George won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his part.
George Clooney has been linked to many women over the years and has been married once, to actress Talia Balsam who is the daughter of actor Martin Balsam.
Most recently George has been repeatedly seen in the company of Fear Factor reality TV show personality, Sarah Larson. In October 2007 the pair were riding on Clooney's motor cycle when they were both thrown from the bike by a collision with a passing vehicle. Both were taken to Palasades Medical Centre in Weehawken, New Jersey.
In December of 2007 Clooney was once again seen with his hand resting gently on Sarah's leg when they both attENded an award ceremony at which both George and Don Cheadle received awards for their actions to increase awareness of the plight of the war torn African state of Darfur.
But the relationship was not destined to stand the test of time. Within a year of the two meeting Clooney had problems with dealing with a long term commitment and called the relationship to a halt ending his connection with Sarah Larson as a friend told reporters, “George is relieved to be single again. He thinks Sarah is sweet and that is why it was so hard to break up with her. The truth is they had little in common and he just doesn’t want to be tied down.”
