George H.W. Bush George H W Bush was the forty-first president of the United States, serving from 1989 to 1993. George H W Bush was simply known as George Bush during his presidency because son George W Bush was not a public figure at the time. At the time of former President Gerald Ford’s death on December 26, 2006, George H W Bush became the oldest living president. George Herbert Walker Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1924, to Prescott Bush and Dorothy Walker Bush. He graduated from Phillips Academy Andover, a prestigious boy’s prep school, in 1942. Bush joined the United States Navy on his eighteenth birthday where he served as a naval aviator in World War II. With an honorable discharge in 1945, Bush entered Yale University. Bush married Barbara Pierce in January of 1945 and focused on completing his education and starting a family. After graduation, he ventured into the oil industry and began to develop an interest in politics. Bush served two terms as a representative to Congress for the 7th district of Texas, ambassador to the United Nations, chairman of the Republican National Committee, chief of the United States liaison office in the People’s Republic of China, director of the CIA, vice president under Ronald Reagan, and finally president of the United States in 1989. Bush’s re-election campaign in 1992 against Bill Clinton marked the end of his political career when he lost the election to Clinton. However, he exited office with an approval rating of over 50%.
Since then, with the exception of disaster relief efforts for the Indian Ocean tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, George H W Bush has mostly stayed out of the public eye. Both Bush and former President Bill Clinton worked together on the aforementioned relief efforts, appearing side by side at the pre-game show for Super Bowl XXXIX speaking out for the tsunami victims. George H W Bush and Barbara Bush have six children, including George W Bush, forty-third President of the United States, and Jeb Bush, forty-third governor of the state of Florida. Today, Bush and Barbara split their time between their home in Texas and one in Maine. George H W Bush was parodied most often by Dana Carvey on Saturday Night Live. Bush actually appeared on the show in 1994 via satellite and again for SNL’s Presidential Bash 2000. One of the most famous lines associated with Bush remains, "Read My Lips, No New Taxes." YUDDY |
